Please tell me I am not the only one with a pelvic floor problem

27 weeks with second baby and been unwell with a cough/cold/flu for a few weeks now. I feel really but every time I cough/sneeze I leak urine. I have now resorted to wearing pads. I had this for a little bit after DD1 but its never been this bad. I am too embarrassed to tell DH and am paranoid that everyone can smell urine because I cant smell anything. Its not helped that I have now deveoped extremeley painful sinusitis and am sitting here trying not to move my head due to an agonisingly painful neck and headache so feeling very upset. Just want some reassurnace that I am not the only one. Should I just keep doing the pelvic floor exercises - not sure how effcetive they are with a 27 week baby lying on top of them all day? Any point in asking the GP for help? I am really upset about it and keep bursting into tears . Have images of living out the rest of my days wearing tena ladies at the grand old age of 31!

you're not alone.

Do the exercises now and after birth, and maybe mention it to MW?

Thanks Scorpio. I am have an appointment next week. I am hoping I will be finally rid of this hideous sinusitis by then so wont be coughing and sneezing. Had to change my clothes twice yesterday. DH keeps giving my funny looks. Feel like a great big whale anyway so dont think fessing up to peeing myself wll enhance the sexy image he has of me right now! This is definately my last child. If ever I feel broody again I will remind myself of this.

No you are not alone with leaking urine, Try this www.continence-foundation.org.uk/
Many women have problems with leakage, both bowel and bladder following childbirth people just dont talk about it.

You can get help via a physio - don't suffer in silence - get referred by your GP! And do those exercises afterwards (I was useless and now have a bit of a problem if I cough too hard!)

I am in the same boat, am 30 weeks tody, have had a horrid cough/sneeze past week and have been waiting to have a big 'accident' barely left the house over Christmas so wasn't too much of a problem but the one time I did pop to the chemist for 10 MINUTES!!!! I sneezed and bloody wet myself.

This too is my second pregnancy and had a forceps delivery with first so sure I have a bit of damage from that as have never been quite the same since.

Thanks everyone. Particularly BKY who was happy to share the info! Its so horrible isnt it. I feel like an old woman. Its so embarrassing. But am grateful its onlymy bladder thats been affected. I think I will speak to my midwife as I am seeing her before the GP. I will also have a look at the website mentioned by baconeggnchips. Might have to wait till DH isnt around though

I'm 21 weeks with nbr 3 and having the exact same problem. Cried earlier when it happened after I sneezed as I am also 31 and all I could think about were tena ladies. Last night I coughed as I was pulling down my pjs to go for a wee (sorry TMI!)and peed all over the floor. DH was quick to point out that he only does that when drunk Oh the joys of pregnancy! They are right when they say you lose all dignity! Don't get down about it, you will look back with your friends over a bottle of wine in months to come and laugh about it, at least thats what I am telling myself. Going to mention it to my midwife when I next see her though and try in the meantime to remember to do my pelvic floor exercises.

I have been fine up until last week, im 38 weeks with my second in two years, son is due in nine days and daughter just turned one on the Dec the 9th, so it safe to say i'm wrecked down there!!! sorry.

I am hoping it is just the pressure of his head on my bladder, shame on me for only starting the pelvic floor exercises when the problem started, I am quite confident that doing them now and after the birth will sort me out though, after all thats what we are designed for.

i had same problem when i was about 16 weeks pregnant with bad cough - i was really worried that i kept wetting myself at that point in the pregnancy - and how much worse it was going to be later on with the baby sitting on my bladder

I did do my pelvic floor exercises for a few weeks (feeling guilty and busy doing some now! ) and am really happy to report that at 23 weeks it's all much much better - i think your pelvic floor gets a bit of a battering when you have a cough and given chance to recover a bit it will do

I'm 37 weeks preg with my third and suffering too. It also happened during my second pregnancy but stopped fairly soon after the birth so don't panic. Get some of the Carefree panty liners with Aloe - they're really thin and smell fresh! Keep doing your pelvic floors!

31 weeks with cough/cold and also a bit leaky. Worst moment was yesterday when I choked on tomato soup - sprayed everywhere and ended up leaking at both ends + from eyes! Frantically doing the exercises now!

13 weeks myself and weeing when I'm sick (which I have been quite violently and often!)

Now just holding a wad of loo roll between my legs when I'm retching- otherwise its all over the floor/through my trews

This is my second pregnancy, same happened with ds and carried on doing my pelvic floor exercised religiously and thankfully after the birth didn't have one single pelvic floor problem. So don't give them up- you're not Mrs Tena 2008 quite yet

Good luck
x
