Waking up with a headache

I'm 5 days overdue and for the last 3 days I've woken up with a headache. Today it is almost a shooting pain behind my left eye. I was really thirsty in the night so don't know if I just need to be drinking more fluids or whether it's something else. They do ease off during the day once I've had something to eat or drink (or had some paracetamol)

I've got an appointment with the midwife tomorrow morning so will mention it to her then but was just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same or knew why I keep getting them. I should probably add that I really haven't been sleeping well either so it could be that too? No other signs of pre-eclampsia (don't know about blood pressure, will get it checked tomorrow but it's always been fine at my other appointments).

Hi Em,

I was initially diagnosed with a "prolonged hormone induced migraine" for 16 weeks....from week 2 to week 18.

It was all over my left eye as (throbbing, stabbing pulsating) well but sometimes spread to the right or the back.

I was prescribed paracetamol, codeine & cocodamol but with the migraine I wasn't keeping anything down at all so these were pointless. The usual ice-packs didn't work (Funnily enough the MN Deep Freeze trial which I took part in did work well) & I can't take the usual prescribed drugs either due to the pregnancy. I threw up at even trying to sit in the dark from a horizontal position. At times I would be banging my head against the wall just for a split second relief. I didn't work for 15 weeks.

It took for me to faint at 2am on the bathroom floor, hitting my head & vomiting (yet again) for paramedics to come & administer gas & air for the pain above my left eye. It was great temporarily for the initial few minutes.

I have had a long chat with the GP & Midwife & both agreed I would see the neurologist with a view to a chat & then a brain scan to rule out a blood clot on the brain which may have formed and is swelling the vessel which is pushing against the skull causing the pain.

In the meantime whilst waiting for this appointment, I am on daily injections of a blood thinner & pills of aspirin.

This is all prevention of course & we just want to rule it out. I am convinced it is just hormonal as I always suffered like this in my teens anyway.

They will ask you if you have a history of this issue initially to work out how best to look after you & help you.

Let me know how you get on Flowers

I had terrible headaches in the first trimester. They did get better though. I'm convinced it got this instead of morning sickness.

18years that sounds terrible! I hope they get to the bottom of it for you and it isn't anything serious. I'm sure it's just hormones like you said, but best to get everything ruled out!

I ended up going to see the midwife. Urine and blood pressure are fine so she's not worried about pre-eclampsia but she measured baby whilst I was there and I measured smaller than normal so I'm now going for a growth scan tomorrow to check baby is ok! Fingers crossed.

All is ok with baby, everything was fine. No headache today either so hopefully they'll stay away and baby will make an appearance sooner rather than later!
