Have I miscarried or not?

I have been bleeding for 4 weeks my period was 2 weeks late and I came on on the 1st July and I have been bleeding ever since with some clumps of blood also. My period before that was in May. When i rang nhs direct to see why I could be bleeding for so long they told me to take a pregnancy test, I took one and it was positive. I went straight to a and e who arranged a scan for me today. The scan showed a baby in a sac and measurements showed I was 5 weeks 3 days pregnant and baby is in the right place but as I have no previous scans to go on they dont know whether it is still growing or to go by my period in may which would mean I was 10 weeks pregnant and the baby has stopped growing. So I could be 5 weeks 3 days pregnant with bleeding but baby is still growing or I could have been 10 weeks pregnant but baby could have stopped growing 5 weeks ago which could be a reason for the bleeding. My period/dates arent adding up and I am very confused and would really like the opinion of others especially if anyone has been through this themselves. I have to wait till next tues for another scan to find out if I have miscarried or to see if my baby is growing. Please help.

Very confusing and upsetting for you. Was there a heartbeat?

Oh this sounds so upsetting for you. Presumably if the measurement is in the 5 weeks region, they would not realistically expect to see a Heartbeat, so they don't know which of the two options it could be.

Unfortunately, they do need more info to know what is going on, have they suggested / done your blood HCG levels? If they take two samples, 48 hours apart this should also give a good indication of what is going on, and would be earlier. HCG should basically double every 48 hours, if it doesn't rise or falls, it is indicative of a falling pregnancy.

[tbanks] for you. The waiting is so awful. Hang in there.

Blood tests for HcG seem likely but have they booked you a follow up scan in a week?

The nurse in the emergency gyna gave us no indication at all as to what her feelings were she just didnt know. The only option we were given was to go back in 7 days for another scan to see if baby has grown so going back next Tuesday for a scan. I wish I had known they could check my HCG levels 48 hours apart it would be so much quicker, a week is just such a long time to wait. No heartbeat as it is too early on

It might be worth phoning them / nipping back tomorrow morning to see if they will do HCG blood test tomorrow morning & Fri morning, you should then get the result on Fri late afternoon if they follow the same procedures as my local EPU, I've waited for a few scans in my time and agree a week is a very long time.

I've been going through a similar thing myself, I started bleeding very light and cramping10 days ago. My HCG levels were above a 1000 so they scanned me the following day. At that point I thought I was 6 weeks the scan showed that I was less due to the measurements of the sac, but the sac was empty. I have to go back tomorrow to see if anything has developed or whether I have had a missed miscarriage. I 'm wishing and hoping so hard that something will show up tomorrow. It's the waiting that has been the hardest and the just not knowing. You try and stay positive but then you think no I have to be realistic and your left having a constant battle with your emotions. I hope everything works out for you xxx
