Pregnancy

Good excuse (lie) needed to explain why I'm not going on rides in Florida!

I have just found out I am pregnant and it's very early days. We are due to go on holiday for a holiday of a lifetime to Florida in a couple of weeks so I'll be between 6 to 8 weeks pregnant when we're away. Having had a miscarriage a couple of months ago (and being a bit on the ancient side!) there is no way I'm going to risk going on any fast rides.

Due to the increased risk of misscarriage due to my age we really don't want to let our children know about the pregnancy until after the first scan. I am sure I could say anything to my 8 year old son and 14 year old step son and they would just accept it but "I don't feel like going on any rides" just isn't going to wash with my 16 year old step daughter. Normally I love the fast scary rides and she is very intuitive! I don't want her to know the truth as she would be devastated if it ended badly again and I don't think she should be burdened with that.

Any ideas for a convincing cover plot?!

back or neck injury is a good one, it'll also explain not drinking "due to painkillers" Wink congratulations!

Back injury. Say the doc said it's not a slipped disk but a pulled muscle. Still hurts like he'll for extended period but is a good excuse. Maybe get DH to mention you hurt ur back in advance of going...

16y DSD you don't stand a chance of her not working it out. I have a 16y DD she doesn't miss a thing.

Chances are she already has been listening behind doors and already knows!

Inner ear/ balance issue (infection?), all fine if I stay on the ground and don't go upside down etc? Then you have a good excuse for a sit down if you feel a bit lightheaded and you can't drink due to the antibiotics.

Ooooo fantastic thanks! Elephants you may be right but I've got to try! I think the back injury is a good one, I'll work on my hobble!

Well I had this problem - I had a knee problem though as well so blamed my knee. Needs a story that starts before the holiday to be convincing

I think you need to consider how she will feel when you announce your pregnancy and she realises that you lied to her.
I think you need to be straight with her but explain why you don't want anyone else to know yet.

Say you have BPPV, a type of positional vertigo.

mostwicked, it's early days so if the timing is noticed later, op can say she didn't know. many people concerned about miscarriage don't let the news out till they feel more sure all is ok.

I completely understand why she is reluctant to announce it and is looking for an excuse for the holiday, however, i think that needs to be weighed up against how she will feel if she finds out she has been lied to. By the sounds of it, she's an astute girl who is not going to be fobbed off easily. The announcement is going to come only a few weeks after the holiday. She may not believe that she didn't know.

im sure the girl will understand if you told a wee lie in the early days as she will understand how hard miscarriage was last time. and as a daughter will be glad your ok and in a better position now and relieved for you. i doubt she would throw a tantrum because you kept it from her because thats really selfish of her and she will understand.

odfo mostwicked, it's nobody else's business until op chooses.

So she hobbles around for 2 weeks pretending to have back trouble, then a few weeks later announces her pregnancy.
Hopefully her SD will be absolutely fine with that. Is it really that wrong of me to suggest that she might not be? Clearly some of you think so. It's the OP's decision, I'm not telling anyone what to do, I'm suggesting she needs to consider the alternative reactions.
But I'll fuck off now
Congratulations BTW I hope it all goes well for you.

Necks are good, DH does have a bad neck and he genuinely isn't happy on some rollercoasters.

However, I fear the truth probably is your best bet.

Yes and good luck from me too.

By the way she doesn't know your MN name does she? Said sticky beak 16y DD knows this one even though its relatively new.

Fortunately, her dyslexic spelling would hinder her searching it.

Personally I think a 16 year old is mature enough to understand not being told given past history.

I had a full half an hour conversation with my sister and a close friend about going to be checked out for fertility issues when I was 7 weeks pregnant as I didn't want to tell anyone till 12 week scan. Loads of lies told but neither have a problem with it.

Most people understand.

Oh DD1 would understand why you'd tried to protect her, it just wouldn't work.

Assuming all goes well she will be fine when we tell her about the pregnancy and I'm pretty certain will understand why we didn't say anything earlier. She is a lovely girl and isn't prone to tantrums. She has had a tough couple of year and would be devastated if she knew imwas,pg and then I had a mc so telling a white lie is shielding her iyswim. My back has been killing me for real these last couple of days so may not have to make too much up!

Most rides tend to be 2 people so if there's 5 of you then you just end up being the one holding the bags/sunglasses/water bottles and can pick a few non-fast rides to go on over the holiday.

Plus it's the holiday of a lifetime and kids can be quite blinkered, even at 16. She might twig eventually but in all likelihood will just be distracted by FLORIDA!!!!

I've been pregnant at Disney and you can still go on quite a lot of stuff, (and I had had 7 miscarriages and was petrified) but the smaller rides in fantasy land are absolutely fine. Peter Pan, Snow White, Dumbo etc are not that different than being in a car. The Haunted Mansion barely moves, toy story is similar. I'm sure there are loads more, and then just for bigger rides just say 'no, I'm not really a ride person'. I was with 12 friends and no one twigged.

Congratulations Grin
