Scan showed sac but no baby

On Saturday I had a slight bleed and went to the hospital to get it checked out. They did some blood tests and examined me but couldnt tell where the bleed came from and the neck of the womb was closed with no fresh blood and My hormone count was high. So they wanted to scan me the next day so went back yesterday for a scan. The scan didn't show up anything so had to have an internal scan. It showed that the sack was a lot smaller in size than 6 weeks which I thought I was and there was no embryo inside, which isn't unusual for the amount of weeks they think I am your not usually pregnant for the first two weeks so estimating I'm actually about 4 weeks. So I've got to go back in 10 days to see if anything develops which they hope it will and the signs are showing that, but they also said that there is a chance that I have miscarried but haven't passed anything. I was just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation? Cheers

I had a six week scan after a bleed and there was only a sac, no baby. But they said this is not uncommon because baby would be tiny. I had to go back at 8 weeks and have another internal. Baby was there.
I continued to have bleeds almost 2 weekly until 19 weeks... And then out if the blue they stopped.

That baby is now 4 years old. Wishing you all the best, try not to worry (easier said than done).

I too have been in the same situation unfortunately I didn't have a happy ending I went back 2 weeks later with no growth at all they call it a missed miscarriage or blighted ovum. I had a DNC a day later to remove the failed pregnancy. Not a nice time in my life and the wait between scans was horrendous like being in limbo. Hopefully your just too early yet and you'll see a little bean with a little heartbeat on the scan. Good luck x

I had the same at 6 weeks and it looked like the sac was collapsing in on itself so very little hope. One week later I had an embryo and a heartbeat. She's 9 months old now! Fingers crossed for you... I know the waiting is awful but don't give up hope just yet.

Thanks guys, this is helpful. I'm trying to stay positive but it's hard. I feel like I've got to wait forever. Next week can't come quick enough it's the not knowing that's the worst. I've had no bleeding since sat, just some light discharge, so keeping everything crossed ????

I had this but ended up with same outcome as bondy hopefully you will have a better ending but it's always better to be emotionally prepared for whatever can happen. I have my fingers crossed for you xx

Just to clarify, are you 4 weeks or 6 weeks. If you conceived 2 weeks ago, you are 4 weeks but if you conceived 4 weeks ago, you are considered 6 weeks pregnant.

Or did you mean you think you're six weeks but they think four? Sorry, just confused!

It's ok I get confused myself. I thought I was 6 weeks as had last period 6 weeks ago but the size of the sack couldn't be 6 weeks, they think I'm less than 6 and more like 4. Hopefully that makes sense :)

Thanks for clarifying. If you don't know when you ovulated then it's hard to know anything for sure while a scan is still so inconclusive. Do you know what your hcg level was? Have they only checked it once?

Yeah they checked it once when I first went in but didn't tell me what the reading was just high enough to scan me the following day. I asked the nurse what the actual reading was and she said that there was a problem with the system and that they didn't have the final figure, but said it didn't really matter what the reading was as by that point they had done the scan and that was more reliable. Just got to play the waiting game now.

Just thought I'd give a little update. I went for my scan today and everything was fine. They can now see I'm 6 weeks 5 days. We saw the the heart beating away like a little flickering light. Relief just came over me and I shed a few tears. It was amazing to see this little bean growing inside me. I know I have a long way to go but the last 10 days have been an emotional hell. X

I could of written this post word for word. I am going through the exact same thing right now. I had a scan yesterday that showed sac but no baby. They didn't say the would re scan me but I am going back tomorrow for more blood test to check my hormone levels. So I'll hopefully find out what's happening then. I know exactly how you feel, it's a worrying time. It seems there are some happy ending stories popping up though. So let's stay positive. Good luck to you

I had a dating scan that showed sac but no embryo, we thought we were 6 weeks but they put us back to 5.

Fast forward to this week and we have just has our 12 week scan... baby not only looking beautiful and healthy but they gave us back the extra week so we are now at 13 weeks...

So I don't think it is unusual at all to see only a sac at six weeks.

Thanks Guys, just thought I'd let you know how I got on and to let others in the same situation know that there can be light at the end if the tunnel. Don't give up hope. Carry on looking after yourselves and I hope that you all have good news.
Booxo - I can't believe they haven't re-scanned you, I'm hoping that's a positive sign that they don't anticipate any problems :) the waiting is a constant battle of emotions. It's been really hard to explain to people who haven't been in a similar situation.

Same thing happened to me. i found out I was pregnant and started bleeding days later. I went to the ER and everything came back normal but the dr said I would probably miscarry. The ultrasound showed a sac but no baby. 3 days later I went back to the doctor and there was a little heart beat. I was around 5 weeks by that time. Good luck I wish you well
