I had strong pains at 22 weeks

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone could help me figure out what happened to me during pregnancy?

I have had my DS now but when I was 22 weeks pregnant I started getting quite sharp contractions, like very strong period pains. I had this three times for about 30mins at a time over 48 hours.

I went to the hospital in the early hours of the morning and got checked over. They examined me and everything was ok but the midwife felt my stomach and was shocked at the contractions.
They kept me in over night then I was allowed home the next day.

Nobody ever explained to me what was going on, at first I thought it was Braxton hicks but they aren't supposed to be painful at that stage of pregnancy are they?

Has this happened to anyone else before?
