ARGH! HELP! Total confusion at GP/Midwife services! :'(

Hi

I'm really stressed because the GP service I've just registered with won't pass my details on to the midwife for 2 weeks. My test said I was 5+ weeks - however there isn't an upper band on that and I can't be sure EXACTLY how many weeks I am. My partner wants to know this as do I because we have a lot to think about in terms of options...

So now I'm panicking... :'(

Any advice anyone? I mean, what does the 5+ mean with clear blue tests anyway and how accurate is it - technically reading the leaflet it could mean anything over 5 weeks so I could be 8 weeks and not know that.

Thanks

If by options you mean that you are considering terminating then you need to make a GP appointment and tell them that so that they can refer you.

Even if you were referred to a midwife you wouldn't get a dating scan until around 12 weeks.

I thought CB could only display 3+ on their screens? Or are you adding on the other two weeks yourself to take into account the date of your first period?? Why do you say you can't be sure exactly how pregnant you are? Are your periods not regular?

A scan is the only way that the stage of your pregnancy can be confirmed for definite if you really do have no idea. A midwife will probably not be able to date you if you have no set date of your last period.

If you are considering termination then I completely understand why you are so eager to know how far along you are. It might be worth seeing your GP and explaining this to him, you never know, he may arrange an early scan for you in these circumstances?

Yes, i would agree that at your first MW visit she asks you how far along you are. Not the other way around. Based on your estimate she then books a scan for around 12/13 weeks. That's too close for comfort if you are considering a termination obviously.

You need to talk to GP and set yourself apart form the normal bandwagon of plodding few and far between appointments.

:(

I don't want to terminate. My partner says it's an option.

I would just like to know what this 5+ weeks means. I literally can't remember the exact date of my last period. I think around the 20th Aug but I can't be sure... and I can't be sure if that was bleeding and implantation as I remember it was light and shorter than normal, hence my concern.

With Clear blue 3+ means 3+ weeks from conception, so they add 2 weeks to make it 5+. Confusing I know. :(

You need to go and see your GP and talk your situation through with them.

If you think your last period was August 20th then you are probably about 11-12 weeks. My last period was exactly 4 weeks before that and I'm 16 weeks pregnant this Friday.

You need to go and see your GP urgently.

An you need to have a very serious and honest discussion with your partner.

I would check if you can self refer to a midwife, you can where I live.
Also if you do not want a termination then it is NOT an option your partners opinion is irrelevant.

If you don't want to terminate then you mustn't be pressured into it op. A termination is only really the right thing to do when both partners are of the same mind, yes.

Get yourself into the docs, or ask reception for the midwifes no. and ring her for a chat. asap. If you think your LMP (last menstrual period) was in Aug then you are well along.

Let me congratulate you :) Flowers
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks - so with the last period (which was august 20th to my recollection as we were at a wedding on the 25th and I'd finished) that would make me what?

I know I'm certainly morning sicknessy and bloated. Then again that could be my imagination. This is such hard work!

I phoned a different midwifery team and they weren't very helpful they just said go to your GP for a referral. When I explained that they still said wait. I think the 5+ thing has thrown them because I honestly think I'm more than 5 weeks...

As for termination I don't want it. Certainly not now - initially it was a shock but for me a nice one. Very unplanned. Regardless of whether I'm supported I'll carry on.

Thanks for your support it means a lot.

Airy, my last period was the 20 th August, I had to have scan last week due possible eptopic. I measured a bit small at 5 1/2 - 6 weeks ( so 6 1/2 - 7 weeks now).

You are probably somewhere between 7 - 8 depending on your cycle length, ovulation etc. where I live midwife care doesn't start until 10 weeks plus. However GP will help with questions before midwife care starts.

Go to see your GP they will help you x

Yes, you need to sit down face to face with somebody with that calender/chart thing that they have and get them to sort it out for you!

I find many health care workers are pushed for time and a phone call is often ended a bit quickly. If you're sat right there in front of them saying you're a bit confused and need help they'll have to help :)

You need to get LOUD! Wink
If you could be 11-12 weeks, you need a dating scan ASAP. After 14 weeks things like the Nuchal fold measurement cannot be taken.
Ring them both again and get stroppy! Smile

I had a similar situation in that I didn't know dates and wasn't sure how far along I was. I didn't get the problem at the GP, but we did book a private dating scan to get an idea of timescales. Not an option for everyone, but might be worth considering?....

Report
maggiethemagpie · 07/10/2013 13:09

Could you go and pay for a private scan, which will date you? In the circumstances may be worth the money- there are places that do them from £50, if you google pregnancy scan in your area you should find some.

My GP referred me for an urgent scan as I have not had a period for 18 months before having positive pregnancy test result so I had no idea how far along I was. I had to ring the hospital every day for a week to get a scan sorted. It still took 3 weeks from informing the doctor to getting a scan.

So you do have to be pushy with NHS or get a private scan done which will be less hassle.

You could try ringing your hospital's EPU (Early Pregnancy Unit). Some of them let you self-refer, and some of them will scan you if you are unsure of your dates.

Agree you need to find out ASAP how far along you are.
