Pregnancy

No bump at 15 weeks and really worried

I know everything is probably fine and that I am over reacting but I am 15 weeks pregnant and not showing at all. I had terrible morning sickness in my first trimester and haven't gained any weight. I'm really anxious generally at the moment, partly because I still feel so run down and exhausted, and yesterday I had to take a day off work because I was feeling so tearful and crap. Now I am obsessing about the possibility of missed miscarriage and concerned because I don't look at all pregnant. I know I need to calm down but this is my first pregnancy and I am constantly worried about things going wrong. When do people usually start showing? I am 5,5 and 8 and a half stone - dont know if this makes any difference.

Hello Fred

I did not have a proper obvious bump with my first pregnancy until nearly 30 weeks! Even at the end my bump wasn't really that big - I still had a 7lb 9oz baby, though. Second time around, I couldn't fit into my clothes at 13 weeks!

This is quite common for a first pregnancy. Especially if you aren't short.

Please don't worry. I was 20 weeks with my first before even people who knew I was pregnant could tell.

I'm 15 weeks with my second and it's sort of visible to those who know iyswim and you show much quicker with a second apparently. I'm 5,7.

In a few weeks you'll feel your baby move and then you'll have daily reassurance.

I didn't start to show until 16 weeks when naked, after 20 weeks with my clothes on! Try not to worry. Do you have your 16 week appointment with the midwife coming up? At mine she listened to the heartbeat with a doppler machine, if she doesn't you should ask her to!

I didn't have a noticeable bump until at least 5/6months pregnant - so between 22 & 26 weeks. From what I remember it just popped out overnight. The good thing is in a couple of weeks or so you should be able to feel flutters and movement; then from about 17/18 weeks you should be able to hear the heartbeat on a home Doppler. I had one and it really helped with my anxiety.

I have my 16 week appointment next week but I've heard people say they don't always listen to the heartbeat incase they can't find it and you panic. I'm considering getting a Doppler to use at home.

Please don't worry. You haven't gained any weight yet, so you're unlikely to be showing and with first babies it can take ages to show. I was in my normal clothes until 20 weeks with both my pregnancies, despite gaining quite a few pounds in the first trimester. If you have toned stomach muscles it keeps your stomach flatter for longer too. Enjoy your slim shape and take care of yourself. Stress isn't good in pregnancy, so please take it easy, relax as much as you can and try to eat nutritious meals.

I didn't have a much of a bump untill about 22 weeks. In certain clothes I had a bump which was obvious to people who knew I was pregnant but I think it was mainly bloating.

My bump literally popped out overnight!

I had the angel care Doppler (got it on eBay). I found it really good. I would have a home ultrasound if I could afford it. This time round though, I'm a lot more relaxed anf calm (currently 10 weeks), I think because I know what to expect. Just remember with each day/week that passes the chance in MMC or MC depletes.

I thought about buying a home doppler, but it can be hard to find their heart beat and then it's a nightmare or you can pick up yours and be falsely reassured. I didn't show until at least 20 weeks and was still in normal trousers a while after that. Had only just needed maternity clothes when I had her at 36 weeks.

Don't worry about your bump or if you don't feel fluttering until a bit later than 17 weeks. It takes a while before you can be sure what you are feeling as they are so tiny!

I think that is really normal - both the not showing and the worrying because you're not. My midwife reassured me at 15 weeks that I would not notice the beginnings of a bump myself for at least a couple more weeks, DH might notice something soon after if looking closely, and it wouldn't be obvious to those around me until some point after 20 weeks. I'm now 19 weeks, still noticing nothing major beyond being a bit fat and bloated, but we heard the heartbeat yesterday and the midwife can feel the uterus just where it should be at this stage - which to be fair, is still below the belly button so no wonder we're not massive yet. I couldn't feel it myself BTW. I have heard that people pop out quicker in subsequent pregnancies but your stomach muscles will still be holding it in this time!

First time round i was 6.5 months pregnant and nobody noticed. I'm now 20 weeks with our second and you can't really tell in my clothes (but you can naked) and i'm still in my skinny jeans. In the next couple of weeks you will start feeling movements and that will be reassuring. Good luck, it's such an exciting time.

My waist definitely seems to be disappearing and there is a general "thickening" even though I haven't actually gained weight so I guess that's not nothing. It's just difficult not to worry when you have no way of checking things are ok.

I didn't show with DD1 until about 22 weeks (and it happened all of a sudden). I've finally managed to figure out how to upload a photo, pic on my profile of my 20 week 'bump'.

She's a healthy, happy almost-5-yo now :)

Eaurouge, that's very reassuring. (I checked you're picture out). My sister had a baby last year and was in maternity clothes by 12 weeks so I guess I'm comparing myself to her when there's no reason to.

I also didn't have a bump at 15 weeks - I didn't really start getting a bump until 18 weeks and even then it was small. I'm 28 weeks now and although I do have a bump which is noticeable to others I'm still not huge.

I was also about 8.5 stones pre-pregnancy (slightly shorter than you at 5ft 3) and didn't start gaining weight until about 18 weeks. I asked my midwife and she said it was because I had bad morning sickness during trimester 1 so probably lost a bit and then just re-gained what I'd lost when I could eat more.

Despite this, everything is good with baby and has been all along so I'm sure you will be the same Smile

Do mention it at your 16 week appointment so you can get some reassurance from your mw as well. One nice thing about being small (for me) is I started feeling some movements at about 17 weeks and now feel/see them really strongly so I don't mind my bump being smaller Smile

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

Thanks pumpkin. I will definitely mention my worries when I see the midwife next week. I know it's silly to worry all the time, it's just because it's such a big deal having a baby! I think once I feel it moving I'll be able to enjoy it more.

I'm 29 weeks and don't have a really obvious bump. I'm sure anyone who doesn't know I'm pregnant hasn't noticed! However there is another girl at work who is two months behind me and her bump is way more obvious! I think every bump is different just like every pregnancy is different.

My bump has just popped out at 23 weeks, but it's still pretty petite. I resisted getting a Doppler because I thought it would make me worry more. By 20 weeks I was feeling little flutters which helped calm me down. Now dp feels them to which helps calm me down even more!

I didn't really show until 20 weeks. I think that if you are tall and slim-ish it often doesn't show until fairly late (I am 5'11'').

I didn't need maternity clothes till I was about 32/33 weeks with DS. He came out at nearly 9lb.
I'm 20wks with dc2 now and I'm slightly bigger than I was with DS but look bloated rather than pg. I think your build and height has a lot to do with how your bump looks.

melliebobs · 03/09/2013 19:44

Some people just don't have a huge bump. I didn't really get one till about 28 weeks where i literally woke up one morning and there it was! and even at 42 I didn't look overly pregnant.

I am 22+5 and in some clothes look like I have a bump, but really it's squidge that's been pushed up by my uterus rising! I do maybe a little bit have a bump, but it's not at all obvious naked.

I also only felt movements in the past ten days. Don't panic (I did!) it will come.
Good luck with your pregnancy!

Have a look at the bump photos on my profile. The earliest one is 18 weeks where I had the tinyest bump and my jeans still fit. Don't worry about it OP and enjoy that your clothes still fit because you'll be wearing a tent soon enough Wink

Another one who didn't show until about 18/19 weeks and I hardly put on weight before 16 weeks even without morning sickness.

But I've made up for all that now Grin

32 weeks and I feel like a whale!
