Is this my waters?

I'm 34 weeks tomorrow with my first, and have been wanting to stay in bed today from tiredness. I am usually up, but today, I just don't want to face the world.

I have been having the usual discharge that i've been getting, so at first I thought nothing of it. I went to the loo before, my knickers were wet, but not soaking and it seemed like fluid that is not discharge.

I've changed my underwear and have put a pad on. It does seem to be continuing, but I don't know whether to trust my instincts on this one because it's not loads. Baby is really active. There's no blood/brownish stains, no pains. I have had an odd sharp pain before when I was sitting up, but I needed the toilet and the baby's head is in birth position.

I have a midwife appointment on Monday and not in any pain, so i've not phoned the hospital. I will do if I get pains or anything weird happens. For now I feel fine enough to just wait. Do you think this could be my waters?

What does it smell of? I would phone the midwives just for peace of mind

I don't know whether it's the pad, but sort of chemically? o.O

You need to get checked, I thought my waters had started to go at 34 weeks and they took it very seriously. Were organising steroid injections until we determined I had wet myself slightly Blush

I hadn't felt a thing and waters went early with DD1 so I was convinced. But they made me cough while checking my cervix and there was nothing so I was sent home slight embarrassed.

Contact maternity unit as 34 weeks is quite early and they will want to check you out. My waters going was very much a trickle and not the big gush women always seem to have on films Grin

Good luck and let us know how you get on Smile

You need to get checked just in case. It's far more common for it to come out slowly like you're describing in and it's important that you're seen to avoid infection if your waters have gone. Most places want let you go 48 hours passed when your waters started to go (though my local trust has a policy of 24 hours).

When my waters went early there was a bit of a gush and then fairly constant leakage. The fluid was very very slightly pink and smelt slightly sweet, a bit like straw. Call your midwife and they can check you out.

I was admitted 24 hours after they went for induction as I didn't go into labour naturally.

Please get checked out. My waters have just gone at 32 weeks and I have had 2 steroid injections to help baby breathe once he is born. My waters had a sweet smell and were clear.

They really do smell sweet like straw. You should get checked out. I would phone triage and they will advise you.

One other thing. At no point once my waters broke was I in any pain (until labour). I walked to the hospital quite happily.

Sounds like what i had - called midwife who said it was prob just incontinence, but it continued, and 2 phone calls later they sent someone to examine me (I was with the homebirth team so they came to me) and confirmed my waters were leaking. I was induced 48 hours later, all fine. I would get it checked out and ask to be examined if you think they just assume it's pee without checking. Good luck!

I was told to lie on my left side for half an hour (maybe an hour?) and then stand up. If a big gush filled my pad then it could be waters, if not it was probably just discharge. It's definitely worth ringing just to be sure, I'd say.

(it was discharge for me, but nevertheless DS was born the next morning!)

Thanks everyone for your replies. I went in and turns out it was pee, though it did not look or feel like it! Baby is fine and is kicking away as usual. Getting re-checked on Monday just in case.
