Big baby, high fluid levels, spd and back to back!

Anyone got any advice/ stories to put my mind at rest.
Although this is my 3rd baby, I never had spd and problems with a floating rib, or back to back etc..

my dd was 9lb 3
My ds was 10lb 2 both natural and ds was home water birth and was wonderful and relaxing
So... Just been for a growth scan as I was measuring 40 weeks at my 36 weeks appointment last Wednesday! Midwife booked me in to see a consultant at 38 weeks for possible induction due to large baby and sever spd! Currently brave and crutches.
Told baby is just over 8lb already and will almost certainly be over 10lb.
Also mentioned I have rather a lot of fluid and discussed risks of cord prolapse if waters break.
Doctor said its ideal to wait as long as possible to due date as fluids/water naturally decrease from 38 weeks to reduce the risk of prolapse cord.
On the other hand he suggested I have a membrane sweep next week as he believes its the most natural form of induction, as we both favour let it happen naturally.
He then went on to say that If she is as big or bigger than my ds then their are risks of shoulder distocia
Also she is back to back which he said is most unpleasant but could still turn round yet...

Basically wondering if anyone had had a big baby with spd/ back to back
Induction or natural...
Just getting a little worried/anxious and overwhelmed by all the information just now. I totally understand what will be will be, and I have to just get on with it, but can't help but crave the natural birth I had before with No intervention / complications.
Thanks to anyone who reads this.

FWIW - dc2 was estimated to be 6lb at 34 weeks, (I was horrified as dc1 was only 5lb 3oz born!) she arrived at 39+5 and was 7lb 1oz ... so your baby may not put on as much weight as you've been told.
I had SPD with dc4, labour was a breeze (lucky me!) and SPD didn't actually cause any problems with delivery.
I had a back to back labour with dc3 and I can honestly say it was the most horrific thing I've ever experienced! Dd only turned back to back when they broke my waters to induce me, so your dc may turn into a different position during labour.
I think we all get really anxious nearer the time (although I feel you have more reason than most!), our bodies are really good at getting us through labour.
Wishing you good luck. Smile
P.S. I'm guessing you wouldn't consider a c-section?

Ds was big and back to back. He hurt like hell but I have nothing to compare it to as he was dc1. Natural birth, gas and air only. He took his time but we managed without intervention.

Dc2 is measuring big at 34wks I'm 37.5 weeks. No extra scans so no idea what's going to happen. Also on crutches with spd Hmm. I see consultant this week.

Thanks so much for replies
I think your right about getting anxious anyway the closer it gets!
Iv never thought about c section before, but seriously would consider it this time, but its not been mentioned and feel to silly to suggest it!
I think I'm just having a good old moan!
My two are 4 and 6 and demanding ( autism )
And I'm still working ( childminder)
Not sleeping due to the rib thing and spd.
So suppose hormones are all over the place.
My wonderful grandad passed away yesterday and I'm glad he's no longer suffering but so worried that im going too miss the funeral.

sorry you're having such a hard time.
DD2 was 10lb3oz and back to back all the way out. It was fine, didn't need any pain relief, 2nd degree tear but it healed fine.

Flowers sorry for your troubles.

If they're talking possible shoulder dystocia then I imagine that would be grounds for a c-section given the size of baby/complications etc. I'd certainly mention it and discuss it with midwife/consultant.
At the same time, it could all end up fine, not a huge baby after all, maybe not even back to back come the time. I'd explore all options.

My 2nd baby was apparently back to back right up until labour - a friends dad who is an Obs & gynae consultant told me not to worry and that if she really is back to back then it is 'supposedly' alot easier for them to turn during labour when its 2nd plus baby (as your body has done it before). As it turned out, when I got to labour ward midwife said she was no longer back to back, so either she had turned, or previous midwife had got it wrong!

Re: measuring big - I measured +5cm from 29weeks with my 3rd. Carried lots of fluid but scan showed nothing abnormal or wrong. I was kept in hospital overnight a wk before due date due due to risk of cord prolapse. I actually quite enjoyed just being laid up for 24hrs! Was allowed home as soon as baby turned head down. But I just know as soon as I left hospital, she turned back to oblique...

Re: shoulder distocia / measuring big / worrying etc, I really do think its worth asking the question about C-section. I actually requested a c-section for my 3rd baby as I'd had 2 3rd degree tears when delivering my first two babies and I was at risk of doing so again for 3rd & being fecally incontinent & other glamorous stuff etc! I asked the question, they took me seriously, sent me for a few tests to check my, ahem, back passage, and said yes of course I could deliver by c-section. You can but ask....build up a good case and see what they say?

Thank you all so much for your reassuring replies.
I have never ever considered a c section before
Not against them or any other medical intervention, but have been fortunate to labour naturally before.
Although my first was pretty awful strapped to monitor on the bed and tore badly, then had a womb infection afterwards!
But luckily as last labour was wonderful I soon forgot about the first!
I will mention c section then and see what response I get
I presumed they had not mentioned it as it wasn't an option

They just keep saying well obviously you carry naïf babies and your body can cope?
But didn't have spd last time, and if baby does get stick on way out, I appreciate they do all they can to get baby out including stretching legs knees and hips beyond my comfort zone and hve read horrer stories regarding spd and permanent damage.

Suppose better read about c sections and recovery etc..
Thanks again everyone

Hi
I had a 9lb 8oz baby and a long (24hr) painful back to back labour. It was first pregnancy. He did turn eventually though pretty much just before pushing stage.
Gas and air only (begged for an epidural but all the anaesthetists were in theatre).
Ended in ventouse and 'minor' (according to my notes anyway!) 2nd degree tear.
Am currently 40+4 with DC2 and initially I did ask for a c-sec but have been told this baby is not as big (better bloody not be!) and am measuring spot on for dates so consultant has said there is no medical reason for a c-sec or an early induction and is of the view i have pushed out one whopper and can do so again - so just crossing everything that they are right :)
Good luck x
