Pregnancy

can they prescribe anti sickness drugs even if you don't have hyperemesis?

I really don't feel as if I can cope with this. Have been in bed all day with severe nausea. I am not dehydrated though as I can keep some fluid down. It has been pretty bad for three weeks, I am nine weeks today.

I have had morning sickness with all my pregnancies but been able to cope and mostly carry on as normal. This time I have had to cancel all work and can't even read aloud to my children as it makes me feel ill Sad

I would go see the doc if I were you
Take care

I started out like you, then got worse & worse & admitted twice. If you get drugs that work it stops the sickness escalating.
So yes from me to getting drugs!
(you may have to try a few before you get one that suits you)

thanks milktraylady, I think I will.

I doubt they will prescribe if your not vomiting and you are tolerating fluids.

Anti sickness drugs don't relieve nausea IME they control the actual vomiting. At 9 weeks things should be settling down as the placenta takes over.

Same as MilkTray I started off like this too, yes they can prescribe them!

I am vomiting, just not everything. To be honest, the vomiting I can cope with, it is just the severe sickness and not being able to move that is getting me down

Yes, but it sounds like you might be on the way to hyperemisis anyway. In my experience of HG x 2 pg, the anti sickness tablets didn't stop me feeling sick, just stopped me being sick (so often Sad ).

thanks for the link

I suppose I should just monitor the situation and make sure I do not start to dehydrate

I was exactly like you describe, vomitting a few times a day but not ketonic, constant overwhelming waves of nausea especially with reading aloud, but with any movement really and any weight or pressure on my chest, if I yawned. I was prescribed all suitable anti-emetics but they didn't help, the only thing that did was literally eating/ nibbling constantly, and I mean with no let up at all - I put on 4 stone!

gosh!

My diet is shocking, I have drunk 3 glasses of chocolate milk and eaten 2 packets of quavers and two slices of white bread. I normally eat no processed food and no sugar or wheat....

Get to your docs.

I was same, severe nausea, but not vomiting. Couldn't function, finding it really debilitating.

Doc prescribed buccastion (sp)

Has worked for me :) still get odd periods of it but so much better now. At least I can read to my kids again Wink

Buying ketone testing sticks is a good idea. Then you can test & if they are getting high you can make a major effort to drink lots of water.

Eating as much as possible is a very good idea- I lost kilos due to HG. It might sound great to be thinner than when started pregnancy, but a nasty cold & gastroenteritis later it's really bad to be too thin.

Re the 9 weeks thing- my HG finished at 16 weeks. Vom etc from week 6 to 16. I did wonder if it would ever end. A bit scary. But basically it ended when the placenta took
over making the hormones.

If you read the HG support thread you will see the time varies from person to person when it goes.
Lucinda is a star, keeping everyone supported on there Smile

I went tru 3 drugs them got 1 that worked for me. Basically they start you off on the cheapest safest drugs, then work your way along until one works.
My path was:
Cyclizine (bad reaction to this, but works for lots of people)
Stemitl (did nothing for me, again works for lots of people)
Maxolon (finally this worked!)
Onedastrol (can't spell it, not as safe in pregnancy, and expensive, but if you are at deaths door then it's a option)

The HG thread has links to proper info on these drugs (can't link sorry, on iPhone).
Key thing is- they are safe to take.
If you need em, you need em.

Remember the end result can escalate-
Dehydrated, ketones rise, feel sicker, more dehydrated.
Result is you need a drip to get rehydrated, plus the anti sickness drugs to stabilise the sickness.
I recommend you try to avoid this unhappy path (ie don't do what I did!)

Drink drink drink!
Then drink some more!

Good luck, I really feel for you

I was exactly the same as you. Was v v nauseous, actual vomming started at c. 7 - 8 weeks. Only a couple of times a day but I think a lot if that was mind over matter or just not moving which isn't ideal. At 10 weeks I got cyclizine prescribed and it changed my life. Nausea seriously improved, rarely vomiting and could return to work. I shouldn't have tried to tough it out that long. Get thee to a doctor, you don't need to suffer so miserably.

Oh and my symptoms stuck with me til c. 20 weeks so its not like they would have gone at 12 weeks, so even more glad I got the drugs.

Like a couple of other posters I started off like you and it gradually got worse and turned into full blown hyperemesis. It started early with nausea and empty retching, about 5 weeks, but between weeks 7 to 17 I was vomiting everything I ate and drank even on various medications.
My advice is go to the GP even if they don't prescribe you anything, at least if your nausea does worsen they will see you have been in.
Buy ketone sticks from your local pharmacy, it will indicate starvation and a result of 3 pluses will automatically mean a hospital admission for fluids and medication.
Try and eat and drink little and often, and listen to your body.

I really do hope you feel better soon xxx

Go to drs and have a chat. I've had 2 HG pregnancies.

With ds I was still being sick till 34 wksHmm no anti sickness drugs given to me. I managed by drinking loads and resting every moment I could. Easy when you have no children!

I'm now 25 wks and been on anti sickness since 8wks. They don't stop the nausea but have reduced the vomiting which calmed down about wk 18. Still get nausea/sea sickness most days and avoid things that make me vomit such as bad food smells, late nights and tight clothes. I go to bed when ds goes to bed and take each day as it comes.

Some days I'm still in bed or on the sofa simply because I'm ill.

All this sickness meds not helping with nausea isnt necessarily right. in my case the difference between nausea and vomming was eating and drinking. Meds helped me to eat and drink, therefore helping with the extreme nausea.

OP if you are unable to get out of bed and have lost significant weight they will prob say it is hg anyway. I was surprised, I didnt realise it was that bad.

thanks so much everyone

I don't think I have HG as I am not losing weight and can keep fluid down. I am managing this by not moving much though, if I was more active I would be throwing up more. It has been rather a grim morning so I think I will visit the doctor on Monday.
