Fell down the stairs

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and felldown the stairs a bit over an hour ago. I only fell down two or three steps and tried to hold the handrail hard so I didn't hurt the baby but I still banged my bump and side (and hit my head really hard on the other wall where I must have sort of twisted round). My husband was at the bottom of the stairs and rushed to catch me so I didn't fall down any more steps but I still cried so much because I'm worried.

I called the delivery suite for advice and they said to wait a few hours and come in if I don't feel the baby move or sooner if I blee but that really I should be OK.

I've only felt wriggles up until now though and haven't felt anything since the fall. But the wriggles have been sporadic and slight so how will I really know if I've felt anything??? I guess I just wanted to ask others what they would do/have done in a similar situation.

The baby will be well protected and the chances are everything is fine. But you are clearly worried, and still have pain, and I think you should see a doctor now and get yourself and the baby checked out.

I'm sure all will be fine, but I would get checked over if I were you, just to be on the safe side. Take care x

Go and get checked! The worrying might be more harmful than the fall and you need peace of mind. How scary - I keep worrying about this, definitely go and get a once-over OP!

I fell headlong in the street bump first at this stage in pregnancy. I got the same advice as you but I was still really worried. I went along to be examined to set my mind at rest. All health care professionals I spoke to were wonderfully reassuring and like LadyM said the baby is really well protected.
I hasten to add, everything was fine!

Thanks for the advice. I think you're right and I should go to be checked.I just can't feel him/her at all and while I can assure myself that is normal at that stage and the twingey pains I'm feeling could be anything, I am still so worried forgetmenots is right that that stress can be even more harmful. If baby was born by now and she'd had that fall Id be rushing her/him to the hospital so I should take the same care now I guess. Thank you Smile

The stress will be far less when you get the OK from the doctor pickle. Try to relax, go and get checked and then you can breathe easy. Take care :)

it isn't so much the baby I think (who will be well cushioned) but whether the impact may have had the potential to affect the placenta.

iyswim? Like, there's a risk in pregnancy that it can detach a bit from the wall of the uterus and that can cause problems, which is why they said go in if you have any bleeding.

Hopefully everything is fine but going in for an ultrasound would be sensible as it'll be hard to tell if movement is reduced at this stage.

Good luck, hope you are both Ok.

Hope you are ok, OP, did you go and get checked?

Are you rhesus negative? If so you need to call a midwife to check if you need anti d

Thanks forgetmenots. I went to get checked and everything seems to be OK - phew! I'm going to be very, very cautious on those stairs from now on. I don't think I'm rhesus negative DoodleHolly - they still haven't given me my blood test results but I guess they'd have told me by now if I was! Thanks for your advice and kindness everyone.

Phew! Now you can relax and enjoy baby :)
I'm like an old lady going downstairs, I have weak ankles and it genuinely scares me, I keep having nightmares about it so I really feel for you. I am so pleased you went and got checked. Take care pickle!

Hi - Pickle l managed to throw myself down a river bank at much the same stage! (dont ask! lol) my lo is now two and a half and quite health. The A&E dept were fab but told me to put my feet up (aparently it does help with your circulation) and ring them again if in the next 48hrs l had been sick (morning sickness had settled by then)or had any headaches etc - l had neither but did eat a lot of chocolate icecream and enjoyed a couple of days doing nothing x
