Potty training

4 1/2 was dry at night at 3 - my fault I put her back in pull ups

DD was dry at night age 3 as she was being potty trained in the day. So we had 6 months of no pull ups at night and just the odd wet bed, probably 1 every 2 weeks. A year ago I was very ill for a few months with a virus and and I couldn't even cope with the odd wet bed here and there so decided to put her back in pull ups for a month or two until I was better. Now can't believe I did that! She soon realised that it was ok to wee at night in her pull ups and has not been dry at night since. It's a year on and I've been lazy and just left her in pullups. I've started recently lifting her for a wee before I go to bed at 10.30pm and she is then dry in the morning and goes off for a wee. I never did that last year as she was dry all night, but it was my mum's suggestion to maybe encourage her to wake in the night herself if she needs a wee. I have been doing this for about 2 months, she never wakes herself for a wee, but does one on the potty by her bed every time I lift her, still asleep.

I think I'm not going to get anywhere unless I just put her to bed without any pull ups. My question is should I carry on lifting her for a wee when I go to bed, I'm not sure if that's the best way or whether just to leave her and she will hopefully learn from wetting the bed.

The thing is I know she can do it as she was dry last year!

Also can anyone recommend any type of bed training mats. I've always used the pampers bed mats under a fitted sheet but even that seems a hassle to change in the night. Does anyone know of anything I can just put over the top of the fitted sheet, something washable maybe.

Thanks

It is a tricky one - my two nieces are 6 and five and STILL in Pull Ups at night - those things are evil. Children see them as no different from nappies and why should they?

Eldest niece is now embarrassed by wearing them but my SIL is still making no effort to get them dry at night.

Soon nieces will be going to sleep overs with friends and that will be crunch time for Mum I think.

I have heard of setting the alarm to wake the child and NOT lifting onto a potty but taking them to the loo. This makes them aware of what is happening and why.

Reducing liquid intake in the evening will also help but ultimately it is going to be time, patience and a wet bed sometimes but ditch the Pull Ups and make a start.

Thanks for the reply lamplighter. Interesting to hear about your nieces. That remineded me of my niece's friend who is 11 and still in pyjama pants because her Mum has made no effort to get her dry. Don't understand that one, that's cruel!

That's it, DD's pull ups are going in the bin tonight!!!!!!!!

Ilovesummer

Good luck and have a good washing machine - better than Pull Ups. Time and patience, time and patience.............and some laundry to do. Treat yourself or the Dcs to something out of the money you saved from buying Pull-Ups!

To save time at night you can double make the bed i.e mattress, washable pad, sheet, washable pad, sheet. That way any wet incidents at night you just whip off the top sheet and mat and hey presto nice dry ready made bed to go. Hippychick do good washable bed mats - they have a 'hidden' waterproof layer so are not nasty and crunchy like plastic mats, they just feel like a thick flannelette sheet.

I think at that age it won't take very long of no pull-ups for the right instinct to kick in again. Just persevere, it will be OK.

Thanks for the reassurance lamplighter. Like the sound of a treat!!

Lionstar, great tip about doubling up and will look into the washable mats. If this weather continues, shouldn't be a problem washing and drying them.

It all felt a bit daunting this morning but am feeling positive now.

Thanks again!!
