She'll sit on the potty for ages and push, but nothing will come out. (I had to prise her off the potty after half an hour tonight.)
Should I let her sit on the potty for as long as she wants, even though nothing is happening?

I don't feel as if I know what I'm doing, so any advice would be welcome.

Yes, if she wants to sit on it let her She is getting used to it.

If your at home in the day use knickers or let her go without and if you have carpet buy some carpet spray and have a designated scrubbing bowl.

Reward charts are handy too. Although we just made a big fuss of both of ours when they did anything. DS is 3 and started properly potty training in feb (when he turned 3) and is dry day and night now.

I think 3 is the perfect age to do it.

Thanks Julezboo.
I did as you said and put her in knickers at home, but gave her chocolate instead of reward chart

So far, no accidents ... yet.
she just asks for potty, does her thing, then shouts for me to come and look and give her choccie.

Now we need to venture outside without nappies and wean her off the choccie rewards. Also, to encourage sitting on toilet.
