Just started lifting ds, as he was desperate not to wear nappies anymore. Found that I need to lift him about an hour after he has gone to bed, then around 3.30am. Have had 7 dry nights out of 9. (I forgot to lift one night, and he had a late night out of routine night as well).

So far have carried him still v sleepy, but from tonight will make him get up and walk, so he is fully aware of going to the loo. However, I can't see how he is going to 'get' it himself and know that he needs to get up. How long should we carry on lifting? I don't mind, it only takes seconds and I don't sleep very well anyway, was just curious. What are your experiences?

How old is he? We used to lift dd, just once before we went to bed, and stopped because she wasn't doing a wee any more. I think we did it for a couple of months. Ds was never lifted, we just stopped using nappies at night when he woke up dry.

If you are needing to lift your ds an hour after he's gone to bed then I'd suggest that either he is drinking too much in the evenings, in which case you could restrict him to water only after 5pm say, or he is just not at all ready to be dry at night.

yes we've been a bit all over the place with the light nights etc, tend to be out at the allotment or whatever and suddenly realise the time, ds is thirsty, not had tea etc, hence the need to lift after an hour. the nights when we are on schedule he doesn't wee then. he is 4.5 and tobe honest i would have left him much later but he is really desperate not to be a baby with a nappy and wants big boy pants at night, thanks for that anyway alarkaspree

We lift DS before we go to bed if he hasn't already woken up by then. He is 3.4 yrs and has been out of nappies in the day since 18 months, out of nappies at night 9 months. When we lift him we turn the light on and wake him up and ask him if he needs to wee. If he doesn't say yes, we ask again and by then he's realised he needs to. He sits on his potty in his room. Sometimes we forget and he'll wake up, usually before wetting but sometimes he wets. (Wetting goes in clusters; he can be dry for 2 months, then wet every night for a week even if lifted.)

Recently he woke up and called me and by the time I got there he was already standing up next to his potty. I remember always getting up to wee in the night, right up until BF all night, so we're working towards him being able to take himself rather than him not waking up IYSWIM. We all go straight back to sleep after he uses the potty so it's not an issue. (He woke up 4 times a night until nearly 3yrs so once or twice a night is like heaven!)
