Potty training

Day 1 Great! Day 2 Not So Great! Should we continue?

This is our second attempt at potty training ds (2.6). He was not ready last time, getting very stressed. This time, we had great success on the first day. He did 9 pees in total, 6 of which were in the potty and 3 of those were unprompted by me. The 3 accidents he did have were when I had put pants on him.
Today he has done about 7 pees and 4 were accidents, again when he has pants on. I had asked him literally 2 seconds before the incidents and he said no.
Waffling aside, my problems are:

  1. He will only pee standing up.
  2. He will not poo in the potty (had to clean that up off the floor today)
  3. He seems to have an accident whenever I put pants on him, is it the security of feeling something there?
Would be great to hear other experiences.

I think you should stick with it, my ds was 22 months when he was trained, our first day was pretty similar to yours, second day however he refused to co-operate and wee'd and poo'd all over the floor, and like you say as soon as pants were on it was like having a nappy. I changed tack slightly and just had him naked indoors and put a nappy on when we went out, soon enough all wee's and poo's were done in the potty at home and he was asking to go to the toilet when we were out. It took about 3 weeks from start to wearing pants all the time. But I know it is quicker if you just stop nappies completely.
Don't worry about it too much, I found taking the pressure off worked for us but it may be different for you, however things do get much easier, once he is used to doing his wee's in a potty while naked then try pants again. Poo's do quite often take longer but he will do it eventually!

As long as he's not unhappy I would stick with it. It takes a while - we still have good days and bad days (ds is 2.11 and we've been at it for 4 weeks). Today was a good day - no accidents at all, yesterday not so good.

If he wants to wee standing up, let him. Much easier when out and about I think.

Poo is trickier, I think. Try not to worry - ds only just getting the idea but we've tried to be quite relaxed about it after dd got a bit of a complex about it all.

Not sure about the pants - that was definitely the case with dd and poo for a while. Can he run around naked from the waist down for a couple of days?

Hang in there. He will get the idea and I promise that whatever you may think when the third pair of trousers goes into the washing machine before lunch that he will not be in nappies when he's 10...

I would give it another couple of days. DS did the same IIRC, went backwards a day or two in, but cottoned on really quick after that. I am still sure he came close to prolapsing in an attempt to earn more chocolate buttons, but needs must

Thank you! It is reassuring to know that this is normal, well, as normal as mopping up wee and poo from the floor 5 times a day can be!. I will leave him running around naked-no problem seeing as the weather is so nice. Did any of you have the not wanting to sit down problem? I think that is going to be the main obstacle for doing poos, you know what boys are like with aim at the best of times
