My ds is 3yr and 2 months old. Up until fairly recently we have unsuccessfully toilet trained on a few occasions. Now he has mastered weeing on the toilet and is dry every day. The problem is he is not telling us when he needs a poo and even when we sense he needs a poo and try to make him poo on the toilet he doesnt go. He has held it in for a maximum of 2 days at a time and then either poo'd in his pants or he has done it in his nappy when we get him out of bed in the morning.
I dont know what the best way to go about this is.
Please help xx

we are having some success with a) Poo goes to pooland - a story which talks about the sensations of needing a poo IYSWIM
and
b) massive bribes. DD gets a fun-sized choc for a poo, and a new book for 7 days of clean pants. this is succeeding where stickers and chocolate buttons failed.

dd did this when first potty trained and held her poo for over a week making her VERY ill. We took to allowing her to poo in a nappy or her pants, because tbh that was much better than the poowitholding saga.

Everytime we cleaned it up I'd say "oh dear, what a shame, this should be in the potty or toilet, if it was you'd have got xxx" we used chocolate buttons for wees and to make poo more exciting we would use the oh-so-desired coke/whaever fizy drink was in the house bribe.

worked a treat, but wasn't sooooo great at bedtime

4 weeks in and a number of stained pants later, she pooed on the potty and has now (6 weeks after that) moved to doing all of her business on the big toilet

DS did this, in the end we found the right bribe - Ben 10 stickers and pants - and it's been fine ever since! Chocolate buttons were apparently not enticing enough.
