Potty training

How old and how do you know?

How old was your LO when you started potty training and more importantly how did you know they were definitely ready?

My DD (21 months) is showing some signs:

Watches me when I go, tries to wipe me with the toilet paper, tells me to flush.

Pretends to wipe herself and pushes tissues into her nappy.

Tells me (not always reliably) when she's done a poo.

I know she's not quite there yet but would it be too early to get a potty for her to "play" with? And maybe sit her on it first and last thing and also before a bath?

I have just been toilet training DC4! For me the big signal they had some bladder control was when nappy was dry for 1-1.5 hrs then suddenly reasonably wet. A friend tried to toilet train her DS before he had any bladder control and she said it was like trying to follow a drippy tap??

At your stage I would have a potty around and just see what happens. Only my DC1 toilet trained on the potty all the rest have gone straight to the toilet but that maybe copying siblings.

With DC3 we had the Pirate Pete potty book given to us and he really liked it. This time a friend whose son I gave the Pirate Pete book to have DD the Princess Polly version. Again DD has really liked it and we read it when she is on the toilet.

They are all ready at different times my DC1 was 2 yr 3months and got it in 5 days, DC2 2.5yrs, DC3 was 2 yrs 7 months (delayed due to being on summer hols) DC4 is 2.5 years and has got it in 2.5 weeks. All had different challenges to work round but it has come together. Do it when you are calm and have time as it can be frustrating for all!
