Potty training

Potty Training 3.5yr old - wee success but poos.......

My DS is 3.5 and for various reasons including glue ear we have just started potty training.

I was planning to start in the garden with him on a week off in the summer but he refused to let me put a nappy on him on Friday and has since then been weeing on the potty and/or toilet - he seems to have good bladder control and there is really only the odd accident if he is distracted when we are out. In the mornings he is dry in a pull up and is happy to wee on the potty/toilet so no night issues.

The issue is poo......... He will not poo on the potty or the toilet, he gets stressed if I even mention doing a poo on the potty to him and he screams "no poo" at me and runs off.

I know when he needs to go as he likes to hide in a corner and will say "ssshhhh" if I ask if hes pooing but I can not persuade him to sit on the potty or toilet. He also basically doesn't seem fussed if he has soiled himself.

He will not eat chocolate, sweets or anything usable for bribery and I have even suggested new toys which he has shown no interest in.

So..... what do I do.... any suggestions please!

My DS (3 next week) has just started pooing in the toilet. He has been potty trained for wees for months but the poos were a real problem.

He got there in the end with lots of modelling, lengthy discussion about poos, Mr Hanky on YouTube and us catching him at the right time. Hope somebody else comes along with more advice as I suspect our poo woes are from over!

This is probably not an approved method but after about two weeks of exactly your problem with my dd, I just picked her up and put her on potty when she was mid poo one day.

She protested but then had a lightbulb moment when it fell into the potty, not squished into her pants and my problem was solved.

I wouldn't have repeated it if it hadn't worked but logic, reason and bribery had all failed.

Good luck. It will happen eventually.

Isn't there anything he really loves? I brought some little toy cars and DS got a sticker and a car for every poo in the potty. By the time they were gone we had it sorted. Bribery doesn't usually work on him, but he had seen the cars and really wanted them!

Thanks all. I'm pleased to say we've nailed it. I used the outdamnspot method and just shoved the potty under him and he pooed. Since then he's been asking to poo on the potty and we've had no more accidents! Thrilled barely describes it!
