DS 2.10 has been using the potty for wees for just over a week now & is doing really well, with only a few accidents so far.

Poo's are a different story.... so far he's only done 1 on the potty when dh looked after him at the weekend. Rest of the time, with me, at nursery or mil's he is just doing it in his pants. Doesn't tell me before he does it, & if I notice he's about to & encourage him to the potty he stops dead in his tracks until its done.

We've offered jelly babies as an incentive (works great with wee) but he's just not getting there. Anything else I can try?

I would say just give him a bit more time -my DS (potty trained just after his 3rd birthday) was exactly the same -fine with wee but took about 3-4 weeks longer to do poos in potty. Nursery staff said it's very common, especially for boys, for them to be able to wee reliably but not poo at first. They said it can take 6-7 weeks for them to get it, so don't give up, chances are he'll twig soon!

You need to watch him carefully and when you see he is starting to do a poo in his pants, quickly sit him on the potty. If you can time it properly, he will already be 'going' and so won't be able to hold it in. Once you have had success in the potty, be very pleased and reward him with a jelly baby.

This method worked for me, but it does require hard work. You have to trail around with the potty and keep a really close eye on them. When you have had a few successes in a row, you will have cracked it. Good luck.

I could have written this! My 2.11 DS been training for 2 weeks. Absolutely fine with wees, a few accidents. Poo is another matter! He panics, says he needs a wee, sits on potty then gets back up again straight away, takes himself off to bed, hides the potty - all sorts of things. It ends up in his pants or in his nappy at night if he holds it. I am just making sure he drinks plenty and trying to play it cool, early days yet.

cece argh don't scare me!!! 10 months!!! Nooooooooooooo!!!!

He did actually get himself infront of potty today then stopped... & did it in his pants. I tried to whip em down in time but didn't quite make it! I suppose thats sort of progress?!

Hope u all have some progress soon too.x

Took 3 months of poos in pants and a lot of bribery in the form of chocolate buttons to get past this phase (sorry, I suspect 3 months was not the answer you wanted to hear). In particular, DS developed an annoying habit on evening walks of disappearing into the bushes outside the local doctors' surgery, then I'd hear a grunting noise, then...

Good luck.

He's 4 as well. Sad

I particularly gringed last week at his Reception induction afternoon when the headteacher said the most important thing was to have them toilet trained and independent. Sad

Ajaney - I am having exactly the same problem! My ds is 22 months and we've been training for just over a week. Pees absolutely fine, very few accidents since first couple of days, but holding onto poos and totally panicking, going back and forth to potty every 2 mins, won't sit down, or sits then stands immediately and ends up doing it on the floor or today I managed to get the potty under him so he stood and did it. I could tell he wasn't completely finished though so after a few minutes respite we were back to trailing back and forth every 2 mins and him panicking. I am quite an anxious person and am trying to stay really calm, but am finding his panic difficult to deal with and the constant trips back and forth exhausting (I'm also pregnant). I'm at the stage I would rather he did it in his pants rather than hold onto it, as riddiculous as that sounds!

Haven't get started my 2.11yo yet as she isn't ready nor showing any interest, but i do remember well from my 3 older dc that pooing on the potty most often as always comes last, once you have their bladder trained then a few months after comes control of soiling.
I don't know why this is, but it always seemed this way round with my dc.

My grand daughter was three in April and lives with us. We potty trained her a bit late and it took quite some time but we persevered. Very rarely does she have an accident but she is still pooing in her pants. Rightly or wrongly I've even said that if she lets us know we will put pull ups on her but still no joy. When she's done it we don't make a fuss just tell her not to worry and clean her up and ask that maybe next time if she tells us and go on her potty or the toilet. Spoken to the health visitor who said that some children take longer. Not getting stressed but if anyone can help would really appreciate it.

It's frustrating isn't it? DD 3.6 is still not pooing on the loo. She holds it and goes in her pull-up at night. She's articulate and says it doesn't feel right or comfy to sit on the loo. She did go once on the potty but was appalled and said it looked 'too brown' Grin and has refused ever since. We've tried 'poo goes to poo land', stickers and bribery. Nothing has worked so far... am now encouraging her to sit on the loo with her pull up on at bed time and hoping we might progress to pooing in the pull up on the loo.

Our 2.8 dd started talking about the toilet quite early. She was telling us from 2 years that she needed to use the potty but as it was the middle of winter we waited. First weekend in May we just jumped in. She got it pretty quickly, matter of days. Big fuss made of her at home and in creche. Got the wee but struggles with the poo. Finally last week told staff in creche that she needed to do a poo. Success.
This week refuses to do either wee or poo in toilet unless she is at home. Creche want her back in pull ups. Any advice please?
