DS, 2.3, accidents every time we leave the house!

DS potty trained himself just before christmas (at 2.1). He asked for a potty and just started using it. A couple of accidents at home in the first couple of days, then a few more outside of the home for a couple of weeks and then he was sorted.

In the New Year, he caught chicken pox, and basically it has been downhill ever since. He still has no problems at home and even takes his daytime naps without a nappy, but once we are outside of the home he seems to be unable to tell me (or nursery staff) in time when he needs a wee. He can always tell me in time when he needs a poo, and has never had a poo accident. Nursery are being very patient, but he is still coming home from nursery with at least 4/5 wet clothes in bags after accidents. I can barely leave the house with him as i know he will wet himself. This has now been going on for nearly two months and I have no idea what to do!

I'm reluctant to put him back in nappies as he is so good at home and I dont want to confuse him, but I'm not sure how to help him manage it outside of the home he also now refuses nappies as he is a big boy, apparently.

Any advice gratefully appreciated!

Get him to go regularly instead. So go immediately before you leave the house and at any point in the day. We call them "sneaky wees" - we suggest that ds dies a sneaky wee to check if one is hiding. Works well as he will deny he needs one otherwise!

he is only little, many boys are only ready nearer to 3years old. just relax and put him in nappies for a couple of months and then try again.

I agree that he is very young - tbh, i wasnt planning to start potty training tim until this summer. But when he started asking for a potty, and seemed to take to it so quickly I thought I would just go with it. I literally did nothing to train him - no reward charts, no encouraging him to use the potty at regular intervals he just got on with it. Obviously I praised him to the hills when he did use his potty , but didnt do anything else to train him. It just seems to be the chicken pox that has derailed him.

Thanks for the drylike me link - i might give them a go, and I will try putting him on the potty regularly. (always a fun battle of wills ) I think the frustrating thing is that he is absolutely fine at home, it's only when we leave the house that it's a problem. Gah!

I suspect when he's out he's distracted, simple as that.

I think you're right Iggly.I guess I'll just keep trying with him, taking him to the toilet as often as I can when we're out and hope that eventually he gets there before nursery blacklist us forever
