Potty training

Late potty training help please!

I am trying to potty train my ds who is three and a half! I've given it a go before but he couldn't get the poos at all so I've left it. I've been very relaxed because my dd was also v late (over three) but then sort of decided herself (after refusing for months) but one day just decided she was ready, put her knickers on and never ever had an accident. Two weeks later she was dry and night too.

I put ds in pants two days ago. Day one not bad maybe 50/50 pees on loo and in pants. yesterday disaster - all but one pees in pants, plus two poos in pants. Poor ds said "what if I can never manage to do it on the loo?" - if he was younger I would abandon now and wait a few months again but he's three and a half so surely it's time. In all other respects he is bright and happy - he just can't crack this particular part of growing up! I know it's early days this time - should I just continue with pants and hope in a few days he gets it?

Any advice on how to manage this please?

Thank you!

Poos are harder for lots of kids, it's not true that every child will magically get it when they are ready, some will need more help and encouragement.

Just to rule out the medical side, how often does he Poo, what are they like etc?

Does he start school in September? If so I would definitely keep going.

I have Dts. DT1, at 2 1/2 'got it' straight away, with nearly no accidents at all.

DT2 was still pooing in his pants occasionally 3 months later - but 6 months down the line, he's completely trained.

We went cold turkey into pants.

FOllowed Cod's Potty training bootcamp.

Best of luck!

Thanks all. We've found an app today which is helping! reminds to go and try every 90 mins and he gets a sticker thing. No accidents so far today and he's loving the app.

He's got another year before school btu he's definitely starting to look ridiculously big to be in nappies.

I think we'll keep going this week and if the poos remain an issue maybe I'll mention to doc - but they are pretty regular and good consistency ie not too hard or anything!

Alittleteapot - I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning the Huggies potty training app. I got it for my 3 year old DS and he loves it. We have gone from not wanting to use the potty at all last week to 5 wees all in potty today. My older DD is jealous that she can't get the stickers and games! I just need to persuade him to do his poos in the potty now...

I hope your DS is still making good progress :)

Glad it helped you too! We are making great progress - he has finally got to grips with poos too and he's even sleeping without nappies! Hurrah!
