Bed wetting at night - to go back to nappies or not

Hello

Sure this has been asked before so thanks in advance for any replies.

Dd is 2 yrs 8 months. Been potty trained and dry in the day since September, ie about 3-4 months ago. Been wearing nappies at night but then in December they were mostly dry each morning so we decided to bite the bullet and remove nappies at night. Xmas day was the first time she was happy free at night. Since then, she has wet the bed 5 times. Ie 5 times in 3.5 weeks. After the first 3 incidents we removed the bars on her cot. The bars have now been off for 2 weeks and she has still wet the bed twice during this time. To be fair first time we (stupidly!) left her a drink of water in the room, so her bladder must have been full, and the second time we forgot to make her go to the toilet before bedtime.

We haven't put a potty in her room but told her to call us if she need a wee (which she has done most times).

We're now making sure we give her limited liquids before bed also.

Just interested in others' experiences/ opinions really. Changing the sheets, especially in the middle of the night, is a pain.

Have people typically gone back to pull-ups in the night in this situation or just kept at it?

Thanks!

I went back to nappies with DD's, wished I hadn't. Had years of bedwetting when we finally dropped then again.

IMO - press on, sounds like she's nearly there.

Some DC crack it quicker than others. DD1 was not out of nappies at night until the week before she started school, and then she had accidents. DD2 has been out of nappies since the Summer when she turned three.

It is in part to do with a hormone I believe that surpresses production of urine.

My nieces in DH's side were in nappies at night until at least Y1.

My niece on my side was much sooner.

I did all manner of things with DD1 including lifting her of of bed to wee, did none of those things with DD2.

DS is 5 and wears pull ups to bed. We tried it once and 5/7 he was wet. I'm not bothered in the slightest, it is to do with the hormone that tells the brain they need the toilet and wakens them to recognise the feeling. It's simply not there yet for him. I'll probably give it another go over the summer holidays.

2.8 sounds a little young to me. My DS is 3.5 and I have no plans to drop the night pull-ups. It usually has some in every morning. Also, even if she is dry most nights it is not unusual for children to wet themselves at night up to the age of 8ish. Just one of those things.

children have no physical control ovr being dry at night and you cant train them in the same way that you can with staying dry during the day
it's a different process entirely
it is to do with hormone production and physical readiness
they simply won't do it until they are developmentally ready
I would go back to nappies and let nature take it's course
night time wetting is not considered a problem until the age of 7

ds2 is 7. He is still quite wet at night. The advice we have been given and seems to be working is:
increase water intake, this means the childs goes to the toilet more often during the day and making the bladder emptier for the night
limit caffine intake esp the 2 hrs before bed. watch for chocolate this has lots of caffine in
get them to go before bed
most weird one but something works!!: sit child on bed and get them to repeat 3 times' I'm in control of my wee wee'

I was just coming on here to post the same thing about my DS. He's 3.5 and potty trained for 6months. He had a spell of being dry at night in November so we ditched the nappies but this month he seems to have regressed and has been wet 5/7. There have been some changes at home so I think he may be, unknowingly, stressed out. Just don't know if going back to night time nappies will be counter productive?

I have bought another pack of pull-ups but resisted putting them on.... No wee for last 3 nights or so. I guess there is probably no right answer! Will see what this week brings and take a view.....

Most kids will get it in their own time, but the 'transition' period is sooo exhausting, especially when its the middle of the night change! Check out Brolly Sheets website. They do a waterproof, absorbent bed pad with wings - called a Brolly Sheet. They sleep right on it which sits on top of the bottom sheet, so when its wet, you can just take it off, and the bed is dry underneath and everyone is back in bed in under 1 minute!! The brolly sheet you can just wash and dry like your normal sheet - night nappies are disposable, and depending on how long it takes, it can get really expensive. Check it out, I highly recommend, I really wish i had heard of them with my first child!
(I also use it for sick kids - can be draped over a couch to save a lot of cleaning!)

I am a little worried because our 3 year old was totally dry for 4 months and suddenly has started wetting the bed again. She also had a few accidents during the day at school and home. It's really out of character for her. We have just returned from New Zealand and she's only just over the jet lag. I wonder if this is the problem. Any thoughts very welcome.

Sorry Charlie I don't have any pearls of wisdom for you.

Smitho thanks for the recommendation.

The update though, is that we lasted until yesterday then cracked and decided to go back to nappies. Probably about 7 bed wetting events since Xmas. "I done a wee in da pants" at 4 am was getting tiring. Hopefully we've not put her back months and years in the whole potty training at night journey....
