Potty training

1st day potty training but need some advice

We have started potty training my ds (2.8) today but am not sure we're going abour it the right way. Main problem is he never tells us he wants to go so we are asking him if he needs the potty (answer always "no") and taking him to the potty regularly - at least every hour. But if he's not telling us that he needs to go does that mean he's not actually ready??

Also needs some perspective as we've had 3 accidents so far today (1 poo and 2 wees to be precise). Is that within the realms of normal

Is this the first introduction to the potty, or have you been bringing it out around bath time before?

Not the first time at all.
We've been using it with some success for weeks - but first time in big boy pants!

Seems a bit quick to graduate to pants after weeks. That said, they're all different but from today's experience it seems like you've moved a bit quickly. We spent months on the early stage of having the potty around bath time and at various stages during the day and waited til DS1 would tell us, even if he was in a nappy that he was going to do a wee, before moving onto pants. Once we moved into pants, he was dry in a week.

We've started last Saturday because my DD decided 'no more nappy' and asked for her potty. The 1st day there were a few accidents of 'both variations' just like you experienced. I would not worry about the accidents but it seems the turning point is when they start asking to stop wearing nappies and for the potty. Might be too early for your DS.
Regarding 'the moving too quickly to big boy pants', I don't think you did anything too quickly. I've been advised it is easier once they are in 'big girl/boy pants' as they can get confused when to wee or not to wee when they are still in nappies as well as using the potty. If they don't wear nappies at all during the day they should realise quite quickly that just having a quick pee in the nappy is not an option anymore.
All or nothing, that's what we are doing at the moment...fingers crossed.
Accidents are to be expected! Good luck.
