Bare Bum or Big Boy Pants?

Hello! My little fella (2.2) is on day 4 of training. First 2 days he was brilliant and every wee went in the potty (poos are a whole other story). But he was bare bummed! On day 3 I introduced big boy pants and he has wee'd in every pair since. This morning I've reverted to bare bum and he's fine again. I'm confused - how will I ever go anywhere again?!!

Did anyone else stay bare bum for a while or do I just go cold-turkey on the pants?!

Thanks for any advice you've got :)

I would just go for it with the pants. Clothes are part of potty training and he'll get the hang of it. He'll learn the difference in feel between a nappy and pants soon enough.

I know it's depressing having a mountain of wet pants but he sounds like he's done really well so far and I'm sure he'll get the idea soon enough.

Good luck!

Thank you Jojay, I was erring towards that and you've reassured me! I think one of the problems is that he isn't very good at taking his pants off yet - don't quite know how we will deal with trousers! I guess I will just be right beside him!

Thanks again

I trained Ds1 at about that age and while he was fairly reliable at telling me he needed to go, it was a long time before he could reliably cope with pants and trousers on his own - probably a good 6 months or so.

So although I classed him as trained, as he knew when he needed to go and could hold it for a short while, I had to help him pull his pants and trousers down a lot of the time.

We never did the bare bum stage, but we did stay at home for a few days at the beginning and he wore pants and pyjama or tracksuit bottoms that were easy to pull up and down.

I found it easier that he wore something, as if he did have an accident the clothes soaked up the worst of the wee, rather than it trickling all over the carpet!

ds2 is 2.7 and we have just done toilet training - there's no way he could manage to get his pants and trousers off by himself
