Wouldn't pooh on the toilet

I wanted to share my experiences with others, as I think this is quite a common problem - but with lots of patience we have managed to crack it.

My DS was toilet trained (wee's only) from 2.3. He has always stood up to do a wee and would do the same with pooing, but only with a nappy on. I tried everything to get him to pooh on the toilet, but he was petrified. I think the mistake I made was trying to get him to go striaght to pooing on the toilet, without any build up to it.

At the age of 5.5, I have finally got him to poo on the toilet.

We started with a rule that the only place he could poo was the bathroom - he used to stand up in the lounge with his nappy on. He designed his own reward chart and he got one sticker for every time he did a poo in the bathroom.

Once he was comfortable with this, he was asked what he could do next to move onto the next step of pooing on the toilet. He decided that he could lean over the toilet and get 2 stickers. This was still with his nappy on though. Couple of weeks later he was totally comfortable with this.

Next stage was sitting on the toilet with the nappy on and he got 3 stickers.

We talked about then cutting a hole in his nappy, but he was still a bit scared of this, so I just did it one night without him knowing. He was amazed that he had done it and really proud of himself - he then got 4 stickers when he did a poo with a hole in his nappy.

Bit by bit over a period of 2 weeks, I just cut a slightly bigger hole in the nappy. Only mistake I made was cutting holes in normal pampers and had crystals all over the bathroom - the flexi-ones (purple packets) are best as they have lining like a sanitry towel rather than crystals.

Once we got to a stage where he just had a bit of material round his waste, I dared him to do a poo without it and hey preston - he did it.

All of this process took about 5-6 months, but was worth it in the end.

I just wanted to share this with everyone as it may help other people who have the same problem.

P.s. watch your fingers when cutting holes in the nappy - many a cut finger and stab marks on route. lol
