Welcome all those with fresh new babies. Oh the joys and tribulations. Post the lot here!

I hope I haven't overlooked a previous thread here for us. Anyway, here goes.

DS2 was due 3 July but arrived 29 June, 9lb 6oz. He has been growing nicely and is 4 weeks old today. I am breastfeeding and have already had mastitis and thrush but am pushing on with it. Biggest problem is sometimes he sleeps too long in the day and then wakes up a lot in the night, not that he stays awake for long, just long enough to feed and go back to sleep. The Midwife says that I shouldn't worry about his lack of wakefulness for the moment in the absence of any other issues, and to see how he is going around the 6 week mark. She also said I should wake him up during the day, which I have been reluctant to do, but I think I will have to do. Anyone else got an overly sleepy baby who doesn't seem to be growing out of it quickly enough?

Thanks AS. Hello everyone.

Vin is my first kid (?only at 37) and arrived 7/7/5 in central London. Had severe jaundice and was in nicu/scbu for 5 days from day 3. I am bf him up to 11 times a day but having to top up with 2x large formula feeds mid afternoon and mid evening. I let him suck me bone dry and carry on stimulating my supply, but I just can't keep up. HV, BF counsellor, all day not to worry at all. Of oucrse I do Anyway, he is growing like a weed to look at him...may get him weighed today.

Sleeps fine at night. Did what yours does AS last week, so I did wake him and he easily slipped over to sleeping more at night instead.

I am recovering OK now from my 51 hour induction and the trauma of bf on demand from home while he was in nICU. I suspect i have my first ever piles? ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH, ARGH!

Hi everyone.

Here's the "info" bit:
I'm 34 and my DD was born on 15 July. I was induced at 38 weeks. DS1 is 5 and DS2 is 4 and they both think DD is great (and so do I!). I'm going to continue being a SAHM as long as I can get away with it.

AussieSim - I'm getting over mastitis too, and I think I have some thrush. How are you treating the thrush, and are you coping with the pain?

The worst side effect I am experiencing is that the pain makes me cranky with the boys and I also can't shut up about my nipples! (I've just deleted the rest of the long nipple-themed para I typed!! ).

The ante natal thread with all our personal info is here although a lot of the info is now out of date as we know the sex and birth dates of our lovey babies! . It's got some nice stuff about ages, jobs etc.

Thanks for the hand waving info, Pamina3, and for the stats link mrsd. (PS - presume you've tried Lanisoh cream (supposed to be great) ?

The hand waving and general squirrel-like chattering is virtually non-existant when the baby sleeps on our chest (shame, she's only 'due' next week !) so I think I'll fill her with cuddles to begin with.

Background Info: 1st time parents to dd born in London at 36 weeks (PIH/IUGR), lots of weight to gain still ! We're mid 30s, I'm a computer guy, dw is a teacher. Photos (which I imagine everyone has already seen) are here

Thanks Hub. I did warn you not to get me started on nipples....

I used Lansinoh with DS1 and eventually formulated the theory that I didn't want to have moisturised nipples but instead needed tough old wellies, so this time I am using a bit of canasten for the thrush but that's it.

Lovely news today - DD's chromosomes are normal, and I took her to the eye specialist today and her eyes look fine too!

Hey mrsd, are you talking about all the corpus collosum worries (and knock on effects) ? So they did a chromosomal karyotyping thingy and she's got the all clear ? That's deffo brill !

Yay !!!!!!!!

I bet your shoulders are sitting 20mm higher. You must be RELIEVED !!!!

XXX

Hmmm.. wet and dry sandpaper to tough 'em up ? Ouch !

Bowen (Bo) born 12th July at 38 weeks weighing 7lbs 8oz. Third son - ds1 has just turned 3 and ds2 about to turn 2.

Bo latched on and stayed on for first three days (waiting patiently for milk to come in) resulting in sore nipples (yuk). Seems to have done the trick though - he now feeds for 10 minutes only every 4 hours (clockwork) Wakes at around 11am, 3pm, 7pm, 11pm, 3am, 7am. Sleeps soundly between feeds (occasionally I wake him up). Very different to ds1 who fed every 2 hours for an hour and it was exhausting. I am slightly concerned that Bo is not feeding enough. He is three weeks old Tues and has only been weighed once since birth- on day 6 - and he had not lost any weight as expected. Also, very heavy nappies at each change. Poos ALL the time.

NOISES: In the day Bo sleeps soundly and, of course quietly.... at night a small army of, yes, squirrels, bears, lions, veloceraptos (?), snakes and other creatures creep into the moses baskets and the noise is incredible!!! Worried me sick with ds1, then ds2 did it too- now ds3. MUST be normal. If I peer into the crib at night, he appears to be trying to beat the animals off with a stick - arms and legs flailing all over the place! Am considering moving him into his own room already!!!

Can't remember - when do they stop sleeping all the time....?

More basic data on me that I seem to have left out of my first post. I am 36yo, DS1 is 2.5yo. Living in Sydney, with my German DH.

DS1 born in Germany was premmie had bad jaundice and took a bit to get him to breast feed. I did the whole, expressing, topping up, nipple shields etc till it finally clicked. I seem to remember a bit of bloody mindedness was involved to get him over his 'nipple confusion'. On Midwives advice I started topping up with water instead of EBM and he soon realised that he was better off getting it straight from the boob. DS2 is a natural by comparison. I went on to breast feed until DS1 was 16mo.

Mrsdarcy: For the Thrush I am using a cream on my nipples that is designed for babies mouth. It is german so the name might not mean too much to you. I am also taking probiotic tablets to try to restablish to the bug balance. Regarding the pain I took some paracetamol in the beginning and besides that just grin and bear it and try to remember that this too shall pass.

I think we are going through a growth spurt at the moment as feeding frequency has increased again - yippee.

Re the NOISES I have recently tried to take my daytime nap on the lounge so I don't have to listen to it all threreby cutting my nap time by up to 30mins.

Thanks for the thrush info AussieSim. It helps to know someone else is going through it too. I don't mind resolving to cope with the pain, but I'm a bit ocncerned about being so cranky with the boys. Having said that, it's all loads better today (2 good nights' sleep).

Hub - yes, they did the karyotyping and her chromosomes are normal. The eye examination excluded the non-chromosomal things we were worried about, so all we have left is an MRI in August - which should just confirm what we know from the foetal MRI and the neonatal ultrasound, and a paediatrician 6 week check in August! Yay! I think that all means that we are in the 85% chance of normal development category! It's like I've given birth all over again!

Hello again everyone, and thanks again for your kind messages. I am feeling a lot better today after a few days of feeling thoroughly sorry for myself and am more positive that I can put all the bad feelings about the birth where they belong, and that's in the nappy bin along with all of Dulcie's presents to us.
I have just had the midwife round and she was lovely, weighed Dulcie to be nearly 4 kilos today... so all that chocolate went to a good cause!
Just read your post mrsd and I am so pleased that all the tests are coming back so positively.

I am off to post our birth announcement now, just must try and do it without crying again, damn these hormones!

hi everyone,

intro bit: dd was born on 29th june after an induced labour. she weighed 6lbs11oz (3.01kg) & is called florence sofia (was going to be minnie but we couldn't agree on minnie or minerva...). we already have ds who is 3.5, & live in hackney.

i'm breastfeeding, & it's going well after a stressful start as my milk took a loooong time to come in. she's just beginning to spread her feeds out, & feeds every 2-3 hours during the day. 2 nights running she's done a 5 hour stretch. wow. i have no memory of how ds behaved at this age....

she is beginning to spend more time awake & we get the occasional coo. i'm desperate for her to smile & am going to sulk majorly if she does it for anyone else first.

right, time for bed i think. we've had a weekend away in wales which was lovely but exhausting. we had emergency singing in all traffic jams to calm dd down - jerusalem went down a treat.

Hi everyone.

Well, dd2 was born 24/7 weighing in at 8lb 6oz (thankfully smallest of my children). Her name is Violet Grace. DD1 is 7.5 and ds is 3. I am 37 and live in Brighton.

We had hoped for a homebirth, but was trying to stay open to posibility of hospital as dd1 was emergency section and ds was ventouse. However Violet decided to take matters into her own hands and was born after a 55 minute labour on our bathroom floor before the mw could get here. Am eternally grateful to dh for his calmness and support after I uttered the words "think we will be doing this on our own".

Was a painful but amazing experience and getting into my own bath adn then bed afterwards made up for the lack of pain relief available at teh time. Will have enduring memory of my friends all sitting on my bed that night drinking champagne whilst my other 2 children played around us.

DD2 is fortunately a very good feeder although does seem to suffer terrible tummy aches. She sleeps well and so far is a bit of a dream.

Fantastic news mrsD, you must be very relieved

Fantastic news MrsD!!! Really pleased for you.

Pamina, toe-curling describes the pain exactly!!! I have to keep telling myself that it will get better. Lansinoh didn't work for me with dd1. Have been trying a Nelsons cream for cuts though. (Hypercal - I think). That's supposed to speed up the healing processs. Not doing so yet though.

My stats are: Age34. Dd2 was born on her due date on the 15/7/05 weighing 8lbs 7ozs. Luckily for me I had a very easy labour (6 mins of pushing according to my notes). But, not so lucky for dd2 who had to have 72 hours of anti-biotics due to the fact that I'm group b strep and only managed 15 minutes of anti-biotics. She's doing great and is feeding well. Only problem we're having is with my sore nipples... Oh yeah, and the fact that she's got an extra finger which is hopefully going to be removed today!

I think I really scarred young Vin for life this morning. I was just out of the shower and he was in his cot. I put on a bit of this new and funny bhangra CD to jazz me awake a bit and entertain him as I got dressed.

But it was so toe tapping I ended up doing bhangra moves over my young man's cot - naked and holding my boobs up as they are too heavy to jiggle. The look on his face was a complete picture

Hi All

Thought it about time I popped in to this thread.

I'm 31 (just!) and ds2 is now 4 weeks old (born on 4th July, 3 days overdue, weighing 9 lbs 5 oz). I also have a ds1 (nearly 5) and dd (3 in two weeks time!). I am a sahm and dh is a lawyer and we live in Cheshire.

Still mixed feeding ds2 (am topping up with 2 bottle feeds per day), weighed him this morning and he is now 11lbs 3oz. He has grown out of some of his newborn sized nappies and so I am off on a shopping spree in a minute .

We are ticking along nicely here. Suffering a bit with lack of routine but having said that I am glad it is the holidays as it is going to take me a lot of willpower to get us all organised come the new school term!

for all of you with sore nips - thank god those days are over! I have no miracle cures I'm afraid. All the midwives I met seemed to be plugging lansinoh but I didn't bother in the end.

Hoxtonchick, ds2 gave me a little smile the other day - so lovely , I had forgotten how different it makes them look. Well done on surviving your first day alone with them both, it takes a lot of adjustment from one to two as I remember.

Right, off to hang out washing and do housewifely things. Back later....
