Plane shot down. Constant trouble in Israel region. Iraq and Afghanistan not realyl settling down.

Are you Mumsnetters more optimistic than me?

No. This Ukraine thing could get very nasty, and that's before we factor in the appalling chaos in Israel/Gaza.

yes, Duchesse, I take the point. Perhaps the human race has an inbuilt warring factor. How sad.

To add a lighter touch, we could settle things with football matches.
But then England may not do very well

I am taking an ostrich approach as I can't bear to think about it. I was a teenager in the early 80s and was utterly traumatised by Threads and Z for Zachariah, and the worry about the USA and Soviet Union going to war. Now I have three dc it's a million times worse Sad.

1,700 dead under the age of 10 in Syria according to the BBC report

No one seems to talk about it much.

I vividly remember the Cuban Missile Crisis, and, despite the many horrors since perpetrated, WW3 has been avoided. So, no, I do not fear another world war. More brutality, inhumanity and useless bloodshed will occur, we will continue to despair over it, but there is, ultimately, too much at stake. So, yes, I am more optimistic, in that sense.

Yes, I remember Cuban missile crisis. It was frightening and exciting.

THIS ONE It is true some conflicts get virtually ignored in our media. There was THE CONGO years ago Mass slaughter/

Margoot. Your stance is as legit as anyone elses.

My problem is I am a news addict. And bad news is usually what makes news.

Are there treatment centres for news addicts? I say this half in jest

Thisone- and those figures may not include all the children dying from malnutrition and disease due to displacement and the infrastructure breaking down. Sad

It's odd - we thought it was less likely to happen but then we are living in a globalised world. All you have to do is shoot one passenger aircraft down and you have killed people from a dozen countries. WW1 was started over less!

This is when I think maybe we would get it right with women in charge!

There will always be wars and rumours of wars.

I never take peace for granted.

It sounds like you are half addicted to the news because you find it exciting on some level, op.

I find it anything but.

Another news addict here OP, we can start a self-help group. A year ago I said Putin was the biggest threat to world peace, but I still don't think there will ever be a WW3
