Maurice Saatchi, conservative value of freedom, money

Saatchi was on Newsnight tonight talking about his Mail on Sunday article

www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2468255/Soaring-power-bills--slavish-devotion-old-capitalism-Tories-hand-Ed-keys-No10.html

I read it on Sunday, but didn't realise the significance of it.

Listening to him on Newsnight, he seems to think that he has one idea up his sleeve that will win the election for the Tories, just like Thatcher's revolutionary idea of you can own your own home did.

He says it is to do with the highest conservative value, which is freedom, and money which is required to have freedom.

He seems to think it will be a total gamechanger.

I can't guess what it will be. Is it some revolutionary tax policy such as scrapping income tax on the firt £20,000 or £30,000?

If the Tories did do that, I don't think Labour would have a good answer to it.

The disadvantage is that it would require cutting back the State.

Would it work? Anyone know what this revolutionary one idea could be?

Maybe he's going to give us his (money, that is).

Oh, and 'right to buy' was not Thatcher's idea, it predates her by some while (originally a Lab our policy, I believe).

ohmymini, you are right, it was first suggested by a Labour councillor in his council, I believe, but was not implemented there. Thatcher and her advisers grabbed hold of the idea to give freedom and control and ownership to the people and take it back from the State.

Saatchi is a very clever man. He seems very confident that this one idea based on the highest Conservative value of freedom, and linked to money, will be the gamechanger that keeps the Tories in power for years.

Sometimes, I feel sorry for Labour. Their Policy Chief is Jon Cruddas. He is the best they've got. It is like flying a plane blindfold orputting a babe in arms in charge of the economy. Grin

Saatchi vs Jon Cruddas? Grin
Game over!

Money buys freedom, we all want freedom, we all want money, this is how everyone gets money, freedom reigns, the Dave 'n Gideon show rolls on unencumbered by Cleggie. Easypeasy Labour squeasy.

ohmymimi, I think you are onto something there, but I can't see the picture clearly through the frosted glass, but I have faith in Saatchi over Cruddas.

It's amazing that it was the young man Saatchi who helped Thatcher kick Old Labour out so many years ago, back in the good old days, and now it is still the older and wiser Saatchi who it seems will keep New Labour out and the good old days look set to continue.

Nothing seems to change.

Saatchi vs Cruddas will be an absolute rout.
Saatchi, yet again, will keep Labour out.
"Yo Saatchi, go Saatchi!" I hear the people shout.

Your certainty makes me smile ( not in a Mark Thatcher's Mummy's patronising way). I am not sure being 'very clever' is always a such a good thing, by the way. We are living with the outcomes of some 'very clever' peoples' decisions.

ohmymimi, you are right. I am joking a bit.
It's not great and it never has been.

You can see how we are all manipulated so easily by listening to Saatchi on Newsnight.

He said he and his think tank have been trying to find one idea (and only one idea, since it is important to keep it simple for the public to understand) that will change the election and win it for the Tories.

If it is such a fundamental thing that the public will love, then why didn't they implement it and think of it years ago and do it then? Why is it only as the election looms that they can suddenly pull this rabbit out of the hat?

And will we all fall for the master magician's trick, are we really all that thick?

Well, I was never enchanted by young Saatchi and the the blue bulldozer, and there is no-one with her 'qualities' around. I'll be fascinated to find out what the 'big idea' is, however. I'm off do something involving hedgerow fruits, sugar and glass jars now, and what that produces is real magic. Thanks for the morning mental workout, enjoy your day.

A return to free markets, minimal state interference, splendid isolation for our foreign policy and social libertarianism would benefit the vast majority of us in scarcely imaginable ways. Sadly, I think there's too many troughers who benefit from the status quo and that the concept is too complex to reduce to a soundbite to make this a feasible policy.

I wish them all the best with it though.
