I just came across this: nomorepage3.wordpress.com/letter-to-the-editor-signed-by-mps/
And was wondering why more Conservative MPs haven't signed this letter? I thought that they were in favour of family values?

If you can't click on the link, it's a letter from various MPs to the editor of the Sun asking for Page 3 girls to be removed. 8 Conservative MPs have signed it compared to 67 Labour MPs.

Speaking personally, I find the best petition is the one I do with my feet i.e. don't buy the appalling thing in the first place. :) Don't think it's a party political issue.

Even more shocking is the fact that out of 8 tories all but one was a woman. Which just goes to show the tory men are all up for googling at and the sexual exploitation of women........but only working class women. Nothing new in that.

Who owns the Sun?

Which prime minister is best mates with that ex editor who's part of the same empire who own the Sun?

That's your answer

Ha! Think that's the most likely explanation Creature... but it just seems like such a simple way for the Conservatives to prove their family values and yet they're doing nothing. Maybe I haven't been cynical enough

Mini, yes I noticed that too, it's... I'm not sure what the right word is.... disguting? depressing? all too familiar?

Cognito, you're right, but don't you think that politcian's should use their power and influence for good, and influencing The Sun to stop Page 3 girls would be a good start, imo anyway.

I believe in press freedom. We already have obscenity & libel laws but no, I don't think politicians should start dictating what newspapers publish. Page 3 is like some 70's throwback, ridiculously out of date, but constitutes a soft and comparatively innocent target in an age of internet porn and the ubiquitous lads mags. It should have gone the way of other non-PC cultural anomalies like racist sit-coms or Carry On Films long ago. I'm always astonished that subsequent Sun editors keep printing it.

Me too. Just like I'm astonished that there are some people who still vote for the Tories.

I recall well the time Samantha Fox was immensely popular. In fact I do recall many Page 3 girls, Linda Lusardi, Maria Whittaker, Jo Guest, Katie Price, Melinda Messenger and Keeley Hazell being very popular as Page 3 girls and go on to become popular media personalities. I find it interesting that Clare Short tried to ban Page 3 at the time Samantha Fox was at the height of her popularity. Of course, just because something is popular is not a defense to some...

Err...let me think, many MP's have not supported a ban on page three, cos they like looking at it!Grin
