I read that as LSD and am a bit disappointed that you won't be telling us any psychedelic stories.

Me too I suppose, but I'm not active in the Church. I have done lots of research into beliefs and history and so should be able to answer any questions.

I'm in west.yorkshire. where abouts ate you Salem?

Rational, I spent a lot of time away from church, do you ever think you may go back?

Mousey - I have too many issues with many elements of the doctrines, beliefs and history of the church. It's a shame because there are lots of good people and great ideas about family, charity, Etc, but I just got to the point where I had too many issues. I asked to be released from my calling as I was having to teach things I didn't believe and I hate hypocracy.

I still go sometimes and have some good friends, but I can't see what would get me back.

I can understand where you are coming from. I have had a few issues with members etc but since I moved wards I've seen the good side of the church. I have some very good friends and have been on the recieving end of the charity, rather than constantly giving it iyswim.

Some of the history is a bit off but what church hasn't got a history? Sometimes the church can seem like an elite clique. I think you've gotta find a ward/stake that doesn't have that. Which is easier said tbh

I truly believe in the old adage, the Gospel is perfect but the men and women living it aren't.

We are all trying to do our best and sometimes that gets forgotten.

I have to say that I don't have any real problems with the members of the ward and even if I did that wouldn't deflect me from living something I really believed.

I've had a long conversation with my Bishop and discussed the issues and questions with him. His response was along the lines of "I could give you answers to all of that, but now is not the time". He just suggested that I need to read the BoM and pray - as if I hadn't done that already. I debate some of the issues with a good friend who is very knowledgeable, but he hasn't come up with any real answers so far.

Final straw for me was researching the life of Lorenzo Snow before I started teaching from this year's manual - using mainly church related sites and books (not the mad anti-Mormon stuff). I wasn't overly impressed by much of what I learned, which reminded me of Warren Jeffs

I did the same rational. I can't say as I was impressed but, if someone was reading up on me they'd find I was a single, unmarried mother and I had dd2 put of wedlock too so anyone reading my life story would probably be very confused!!

I often debate things with dh and other members and sometimes I get what I'm looking for but more often than not, I find nothing.

What often makes me laugh is that the only reason js prayed about the word of wisdom and came up with the no smoking 'rule' was because Emma was complaining about the men chewing tabbaco and spitting and it was going on her floor!! Me and my best friend (we've both been members but we fell away and have come back) often joke that we can no longer smoke due to Emma smith having pms!! Grin

Nickname, it took me a long while to see that even people high up in the church aren't some kind of demi god and have proper issues themselves. The people I had issues with, I no longer have to see and that makes life a bit easier for me!

Hi guys, I am in Scotland, I was Excommed a long time ago over something I actually did not do, but I was young and hurt by what had happened ( my mother threw me out and told the Bishop a lot of lies and then didnt forward any of the letters until the one telling me I was no longer a member ), the Bishop at the time wasnt interested so I let them do it without attempting to put them right. I do however still class myself as LDS and I have been told by members I would be able to go back but I can not bring myself to do so. Silly really but there you go lol x

Hey Salem. Of course you would be able to go back! Why not contact your local missionaries?? If you been ex'ed you'll need your lessons again, as well as to be re baptised (I'm in the same boat due to my records being lost by my previous ward). That's all easy enough, if you've done it once, you can certainly do it again!

Are you still in the same ward/branch or a different one? Why not go tomorrow, assuming you can get there? Even just for sacrament and see how you feel after?

Interesting to hear everyone's stories. Thanks for sharing. I'm a convert, joined when i was at university but had known about the church for years as had a few friends at secondary who were members. I'm the only member in my family but married someone who has been a member his whole life and all his immediate family are active.

I feel personally it is important to remember that the only person to walk through this life perfectly was the saviour. Prophets and apostles have also made mistakes, some bigger than others ... Joseph Smith is constantly being berated in the Doctrine and Covenants (and you should read Rough Stone Rolling which is a very good biography of his life), David sent another woman's husband off to his death so he could sleep with her. I know My life wouldn't hold up under a lot of scrutiny, just as well the Lord looks on the heart. The calling gets my respect but the man earns it. It also helps that only certain callings are for 'life' and sometimes a release is a release.

I've never read that but might have to search it out. Sounds good.

Your views and feelings kinda sum up my own. I know I've had a past and so have most other members. We can't all be perfect, were not made that way.

Hi another LDS member here. I live in Ireland and converted 8 years ago. Lots of challenges and peaks and troughs.

Nicknamegrief · 09/05/2013 13:36

I imagine the church to be quite small in Ireland, am I correct in that thinking?

I had a friend who served his mission there, but it would be over 10 years ago now.

Did any of you watch General conference? One of my favourite talks was Jeffrey R Hollands, Help Thou My Unbelief (I think that was the title).

Salem, could the missionaries arrange a lift for you? Worth a try if you want to go?
