Psalms - lots there about trusting in God when all is going wrong but is that what you are after?

Or Paul getting shipwrecked, flogged etc and still keeping on going. Tough cookie Paul.

William Wilberforce and a lifetime to abolish slavery? Then you can use film clips from 'Amazing Grace'

Yeah, that's the problem with the bible really, all a bit ambiguous and abstract.

Perhaps you can find better examples in some more modern fiction like Harry Potter perhaps. That has far more consistency and the messages it conveys are stronger and more relevant to the modern world.

Have you tried the beatitudes? The meek shall inherit the earth etc?

Give it a rest pedro.

Sorry, not sure what you're getting at?

Harry potter vs the bible. The whole 'the Bible is a load of nonsense and I'm going to take every opportunity on every possible thread to say so' gets a bit tired after a while. Give it a rest.

Fair enough, just suggesting that it's actually a very rich source of perseverance stories.

I'm also fascinated that there are people who still haven't read it, lol!

If I'm mistaken then I apologise, I may be mixing you up with another poster on another thread.

You probably aren't, but I never said the bible was nonsense here. I was making a genuine suggestion to the OP and you start making stuff up about attacking the bible. Weird.

Book of Job - that's the one where Satan has a bet with god and loses in the end. Mind you god made Job suffer for his (gods) gamble. Or try genesis, where god creates Adam and Eve and gives up on them both pretty easily.

Lol at god giving up.

Please. I don't believe in god. This has to be godly.

It's not a moment to be atheist.

If you want perseverance, look at the book of Job. For a light a touch "In the Book of Job, Job who is a prophet in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, it shows how when losing everything, in circumstances completely beyond ones control, everything out of control but oneself, one can choose to listen to others or follow ones own self and persevere".

I'm veering towards old Paul and his crap luck.

Either is good, Job lost all of his children (6+), his home and all his belongings in horrendous 'natural' disasters, pretty much all his friends turned against him as did his wife for a time, and becomes horrendously, painfully ill (all for a celestial bet that was so out of his control, he did nothing wrong but what happens to him changes how other's see him and he never knows of why it is happening) while Paul's is mostly down to persecution by other people's perception of his actual actions and their perception of his faith and the whole why everything is going wrong is a bit more there. So it depends on what kind of lesson you're going for.

actually, the harry potter thing is not such a bad idea. book 7 harry has to be killed as he is the 6th horcrux. it seemed like he had lost, but by dying it mde it possbile for voldemort to be defeated and killed. sound familiar?

who are you aiming the talk at?
