how to find Zen Buddhist-style meditation

I am very interested in this but found I can't get on well with tapes and doing it at home alone. I did a search but didn't find anything on mumsnet, so sorry if this has already been covered before. I have read lots about it. I'm actually Unitarian but the meditation part of that lasts about 20 seconds once a week, and I think I would benefit from more time. It might even be possible to set up a class or something in the chapel on a weeknight (it fits well with Uniatrian philosophy I believe)-do I have to find a "guru" and how do I know they are ok?

You might like to get in touch with these people. www.obcon.org. The Order of Buddhist Contemplatives practice in the tradition of Soto Zen which is a very accessible, meditiation led branch of Zen Buddhism, the other being Rinzai which is more study based. Depending on where you live you may be able to find a group that you can sit with or at least take some instruction from.

A book you may find inspiring is ' Returning to silence ' by Dainin Katagiri.

Hope this helps.
