Hi. We are looking for a black labrador having had them in the family when I was young. They are good with children. However, not sure whether to get one from a rescue centre or a breeder? Has anyone had experience of getting one from rescue centre? Does anyone know of any breeders in the following area; Surrey, Sussex, Oxfordshire, Glouces., Worcester, Bucks? Thanks any help would be great!

Nope but you can ask for breeders' contact details as the kennel Club web site. (you fill a form and they send you a list of breeders who have puppies available)

Labradors are lovely dogs, I have one myself, but like all dogs, labs can have temperament/social problems. I'm sure you'll find quite a few puppies or "second hand" adult dogs that need rehoming. Just be careful, especially if you have children. If you're going for a pup, it is really really important to meet both the parents. A good breeder will make sure both parents are available to meet. They are the best indicator of temperament.

Ime, and off the top of my head, if you're going to get a rescue, the things I'd be looking at mostly would be - tolerance/friendliness toward kids (even when they're screaming and jumping around), recall (so you don't spend hours looking for him when out on a walk), and sociability with other dogs (aggression or dominance aggression can make taking him for a walk a complete misery).

One last thing, though I'm sure you'll know already. Labs need a LOT of exercise - at least an hour off lead a day. Every day. For up to about 15 years. They certainly keep you fit!

Good luck!

Somebody told me that pedigree dogs are easy to find in BAttersea Home near the time of the holidays (sadly some people still dump their pets to go in holidays, or many realise the huge amount of exercise they need to keep relaxed enough not to trash the house).Maybe you can find a good dog to re home there, in the US labradors and golden retrievers are the most popular bread in refuges for the same reason.

www.pedigreedogs.co.uk has a few useflu sections on it including a breeder search and a puppy register along with dogs for re-homing. I'd take a look there.

HTH
