Cat hasn't come home tonight...

My 2 year old male cat hasn't come home tonight. I haven't seen him since this morning which is quite unusual as he usually pops in and out all day then comes in at night. I'm very worried. I live in quite a rural area so I don't think he could have been run over unless he has gone quite far and I have checked the road nearest to me. I have called for him outside and shaken his box of cat food but there's no sign of him. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance that he will be ok? I'd be truly devastated if something happened to him.

Oh no, hopefully he's just out having too good a time hunting. Fingers crossed he comes back soon for you.

Thank you. I'm worried as well because it's raining again and he usually hates the rain :(

Oh no :( Is he microchipped? Was he wearing a collar? You could call around local vet surgeries to see if anyone's handed him in. I hope he comes home soon.

Oh it's awful when they do this, isn't it?
Is he neutered? Un neutered toms tend to wander more, in search of females, but neutered toms don't tend to have big of a "patch."
Keep going out with a box of dry food or pack of dreamiest and giving it a good old shake.
Do you have neighbours who might have accidentally locked him in a shed?

Try not to panic, my boy went away for five nights once, I was absolutely convinced something had happened but he wandered in bold as brass as nothing had happened. Same age as yours. Maybe it's the age of rebellion!

Let us know if he turns up.

He is microchipped but doesn't wear a collar as he's never accepted one and tried to tear it off :(

I'm exhausted as I've been looking all night.

I 've made posters and put them through neighbours letter boxes.

He's a neutered male so doesn't usually wonder very far.

:(

I will call the vets now they are open.

Every summer we have at least one night when ours goes off on a "night mission" - just long enough to make us convinced something has happened. Then she turns up bold as brass. I hope your dear boy reappears during the day - do get neighbours to check sheds/garages/outbuildings x

Thanks for the reassurance.

I've phoned the vets who have made a note of it.
My main problem as well is that I don't have a cat flap so he can't get in unless I hear him meowing at the window.

I am actually supposed to be going away today and I've cancelled it because he's got no way of getting in.

My next door neighbour has terrified me telling me that my other neighbour said that if my cat ever went into his house he would kill it :(
He is a very nasty man but I can't imagine he would do that! I hope.

I'm thinking that perhaps another cat has scared him off?

I can't imagine that he's just gone for a wonder because as I said, it was raining last night heavily, and he hates the rain and the cold.

I really shouldn't have pets because I get far too attached.

Your neighbour is a wanker but remember, cats are really fast and slippery and if he felt he was in danger he'd get out pronto.
Sorry you've had to cancel your trip (I would have too.) I honestly think he's testing the water a bit and will probably saunter in soon.

I get too attached as well. Sad

Thanks.

Has your cat ever stayed out in the rain only to reappear a few days later?

Another neighbour has said that their cat came home the other night looking beaten up and scratched on the face.

I'm too exhausted to go out looking again, I suppose I should have a quick nap as I didn't even attempt to sleep last night. I'm leaving the window open. I really really hope he's ok. My other cat (his sister) is looking very worried about the place.

If he was far from home when it started raining perhaps he's just hid and is sleeping it off ?

Yes, I thought of this scenario. I hope that's the case. Thanks

He's still not back and it's raining again.

I've been looking around again and no sight or sound of him and no sightings from people.

Sorry to hear this.
I know every terrible possibility will be going through your mind right now but honestly, it is still early days. Sorry, I know that's unhelpful - I certainly didn't listen when people said that to me.

Have you tried posting on Facebook that he's lost, I see lots of posts like this on the local selling sites.

Hi.

Yes I'm imagining that he's hurt somewhere and afraid :( or worse he's dead

I've posted on facebook and put posters about and asked all my neighbours to check their gardens etc and rang vets and rspca. I don't know what else to do

I am supposed to be moving in 2 weeks and I can't think what I will do if he doesn't turn up before then

Still no sign of him so I'm going to go looking again. I just can't think where he would be. I feel like I have looked everywhere.

Oh no! :-(
Good luck on your wander, don't forget to take a box of food with you. Everything crossed he's home soon. Is it safe to leave the window open tonight?

HE'S HOME!!!!

I'm so ecstatically happy I can't tell you!

I went out again to look for him and as I do he came shooting up the path like a tornado! I have no idea where he's been! He looks a little scared and is sniffing out his surroundings. I'm just so pleased he's back!

Thanks to everyone for your advice and comments! :)
