Petitions and activism

to ask you to sign this petition for subtitles on Sky On Demand?

Sky have disabled subtitles on their On Demand service. Someone (I don't know them) is pushing this petition for Sky to buck up and sort out the subtitles.

As someone with hearing loss, I depend on subtitles for any audio. If companies are not pushed to provide it, they won't bother, and a big swathe of people like me will be excluded from a lot of content. It would be great if you would support this.

Since this is something that really irritates me, I have signed!

Subtitles should be available on all programmes in this day and age!

I will sign it. I love subtitles. I always have them on.

thanks. I agree MrsBear, in the current technological age, there is no excuse for any programme not having subtitles.

We always use subtitles (even though neither of us have hearing impairment) I think they're fab and I hate Sky, so I'm off to sign..

DH likes the subtitles too, and he has bat-like hearing (by which I mean extremely good). Before he married me, he used to have the subtitles on the TV so that he could turn the sound off and listen to something different on the radio at the same time. Strange man.

Im signing, subtitles were a revelation when I had a newborn screamer, amd I was really shocked at how terrible they are. Anything that raises awareness for the use of subtitles gets my vote

Ill sign too. we need them..

we also need PROPER subtitles from professional people, not the million typos some have.

I can understand for live programmes but pre-recorded? no excuse for bad subtitles.

Signed. I always watch with subtitles on, can't concentrate otherwise.

Im the same Holiday I have the permanent subtitle option on the tv and its so frustrating when they don't have them.

also another thing is when the subtitle is a minute behind the words said!

this is why we got rid of sky a few years back, half the time subtitles weren't working on channels never mind on demand.

I'm off to sign now Smile

Signed. This drives me insane - I'm hard of hearing and have not been able to wacth lods of shows recently due to this. If it doesn't change, I'm cancelling my subscription and sticking with Netflix.

I used to work in the subtitling dept at the BBC. Many moons ago it was quality that counted, then the percentages rose (which is a good thing), but the money/staff didn't rise so it became an exercise in churning out as much as possible. As long as people hit the 100% targets. Most pre-rec stuff is done live now, cos it's quicker and significantly cheaper.

I'll sign! I need subtitles on most American programmes because I have hearing loss, and even with a hearing aid it is sometimes difficult to follow what's going on!

Signed.

I like subtitles even though my hearing is fine.
Hope they pay attention.

I have APD so subtitles are a must. But iPlayer online tends not to have subtitles available either, even when they were available on tv live. It is absolutely infuriating.

Report
OddBoots · 23/04/2014 18:26

Signed. It sounds like they used to have them and then removed them so they can't argue that it's not possible.

It's amazing how many of us who have full hearing like the subs on.
