Petitions and activism

Looks like Waitrose are on the 'do not buy from' list now.

They have struck a deal with Shell to open in their petrol stations. Shell are not good guys at all.

Greenpeace Facebook page if anyone wants to sign the petition to try and make them listen and not open in Shell garages.

We've had a waitrose in our local petrol station for months now. The queues are out the soddig door now!

Waitrose have been in partnership with Shell for a while. I have a card with them that collects fuel points.

I've signed the petition! Hate the thought of drilling in the artic, and this campaign should bring it to people's attention

I hope.

None of the energy companies are great for the environment, you can't boycott them completely, and Waitrose are one of the more ethically sound supermarkets. I think if you have strong principles you need to get a small holding and grow all your own food, otherwise some of the money you spend on food is always going to Shell or similar companies because its transported by lorry. To be honest I gave up having very strong principles as there is no solution. Every chemical you come across has been tested on animals at some point. All energy companies drill and pollute and ruin the environment to fulfill our need for fuel. I suppose you have to pick and choose your battles, give in completely or go and live in a cave.

What vj32 said.
Life is too short and difficult enough as it is to stress about all this.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this petition/boycott? The Greenpeace page didn't seem very informative beyond 'Shell are Bad' Confused.

Greenpeace don't like any oil company on principle do they? If Shell are out how about BP?... oh, hang on a minute....

Unless you are totally off grid and growing your own hemp etc you can't really get on your high horse about shell, I don't shop at wait rose cos they don't cater to plebby areas

ephiny here's a link for some more info: m.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/sep/17/shell-postpones-arctic-drilling-next-year

It boils down to the fact that shell are planning to drill for oil in the artic without being fully prepared for the conditions, which, inevitably, will lead to an accident and bingo, swathes of pristine artic will be covered in oil.

Oh honestly. Perhaps if you all stopped driving then it wouldn't be an issue? Oh and heating our homes and offices and schools.

We need fuel. There is fuel there. Drill away Shell, drill away.

They're not a charity, Watrose is a business too. Boycotting won't make a jot of difference, just means you can't eat their lovely food and perhaps have to travel further to buy petrol. Nah, I'm not in.

Waitrose petrol stations have always been supplied by shell. The only difference is that they are now advertising the fact - which is a pain in the backside for us as what was a nice quiet local garage has now started to gather huge queues! I find it amazing that all the time they were the cheapest petrol around but didn't advertise which petrol, nobody went there. Now it's shell they all think they're getting a good deal. Shows how much attention people pay to what they buy I suppose!

"
Drill away Shell, drill away." Grin Grin

who cares really. All this boycotting lark achieves is to get people worked up over something they can't actually do anything about. Waitrose is too snobby for most of us plebs anyway.
Oh and it's arctic.

The bad boys are whoever gave Shell permission to drill there.

I assume that you don't use any oil based products at all? Thought not.

That news puts them on our 'do buy' list (if there was a waitrose petrol station nearby which there isn't). Because most supermarket petrol is pretty shitty compared to Shell or BP. DH didn't believe this when the Toyota garage told him that poor quality petrol was what was making his engine misbehave - so he did the experiment and found it actually does make a significant difference what you put in your tank. Somewhat better mileage too, I think.

This is probably why you're seeing queues now, Pugs.

Do you really suppose that the other supermarkets have found a green approved source for their fuel? I seriously doubt it.

Rather than signing this, sign the government petition to reach an agreement on protected ice areas next year.

They failed to agree this year and meet again in January, I believe. Creating a no drilling, no fishing conservation area is a fantastic idea.

It's really a case of picking your battles with this, and Waitrose are already contracted so are very unlikely to pull out.

I would hang my head in shame except I'm not ashamed.

Do I care about wildlife or keeping my family warm this winter? A: not the wildlife

We need fuel. We should grab it wherever we can find it.

I own a car so would be a hypocrite to participate.
DD's friend dad works on the oil rigs so talks to Shell reps all the time. Apparently Shell supply Tesco/Asda/Morrisons, too, if you want to be thorough in your boycott.

Drill, baby, drill.

Plus I hear Waitrose do seal blubber on the fish counter.

Unless you're self sufficient and use nothing manufactured in any way it's a bit hypocritical.

Yes, I've heard that too, joan. I think they club them over the head and everything.
