Does anyone else find 'language inflation' MASSIVELY annoying?

Why does everything have to be gigantic, fantastic and unbelievable?

I'm particularly annoyed with the repeated use of the term "massive" in reference to things that have no mass at all, for instance, "massive sale".

The people who market cleaning products like dishwasher tablets are now beginning to run out of hyperbole to use for their products, having run through super, ultra, mega, 3-in-1, 4-in-one, 5-in-1, 10-in-1 and now all-in-one. I'm waiting for the next stage - Finish Sublime with transcendant rinse aid.

My DW - she's Scottish - often refers to large things as "huge, big, massive". As in, "did you see that git in the huge, big, massive 4X4?"

I find that quite endearing (luckily) but I agree about language inflation. I work in the book industry and I've lost count of the number of times I screamed silently at my own personal bugbear: "This incredible novel..." I'd be mightily pissed off if I was an author. I'd rather have my work described as credible rather than the opposite.

How about going to a "massive rug sale"? This has been advertised on local radio recently, is it a rug sale where they are selling a large amount of rugs or is it a sale where you can buy a massive rug?

Not really related.. or pedantic..but this reminds me of a sign in Woolworths years ago;
Picture of a woman with a face like and MASSIVE letters saying "WOW!!!! HALF PRICE COATS!!!!"
Became a running joke between me and DP for far too long a while.

Good times, good times...

PS: Please don't pedantify me.
Thanks for listening.

'quite big sale of normal-sized rugs' cali?

admit it, a 'massive rug sale' is sooo much more enticing.

'Rug sale' is punchy.
