Sorry I wasn't sure where to put this but though you pedants' would likely know..

My understanding of the word 'tithing' is that it was like an old religious giving (is it like a tax?) but anyway that it stemmed from 'the church' (a church? is it religion specific?), I might be wrong...

My question is, in this day and age is the word still used specifically in the context of religious giving or is it used in a looser way these days to describe voluntary giving, be it to a church or any other organisation?

I'm quite nrevous posting in "pedants' corner" lol. my grammer and spelling is always dreadful so I apologise profusely, please be gentle with me

Thanks LL.

I now know I can ignore the 'tithing' box

From what the God Squad around me allude to; tithing is very much a feature of a lot of modern churches these days.

I see it as any organisation or individual who chooses to regularly donate a percentage of their income to whatever cause, and not necessarily anything to do with religion

many ethical companies do this, eg Green People donate 10% of profit to charity
