Pedants' corner

I have been called racist. I want to argue my case against this charge in very precise, pedantic terms - so here I am.

Mehdismummy, please tell me why I am a racist?

I don't think it's racist to object to certain tenets of certain religions. Religion and race are not the same.

In a very precise, pedantic way, could you give us the substance of the charge against you?

I know I am not racist Madamez.

I also know I am not politcally correct about certain things either. I've come a long way in 12 short months, from pretty wimpy liberal to a left wing anti-totalitarian. I have done my homework. I am ready to fight my corner.

My posts re male circumsition;

Mon 03-Mar-08 18:25:27

There are very real risks to male circumsion.

I don't believe in the mutilation of anyone's genitals, let alone a defenceless infacts, which is what circumsition is, traditional mutilation that is. Female circumsition is justified by tradition too. None of it is acceptable in mu opinion.

Byt that is my opinion. Just adding to the melting pot.

Why can't your partner wait and let his son make up his own mind when he is an adult?

Then at 22:11:55

I'm not jumping the gun MO - they are both mutilations; I know one is more brutal than another, I'm not equating them on that level; but that doesn't make one less wrong if we are talking about individual sovereignty, they are both just as wrong on that level.

Between these;

what a surprise finding you against it monkeytrousers. Getting ready to start your vile racist thoughts are you? Imo you are no better than ucm but just use fancy words to be a racist. What the hell do you think you are doing linking a site that will just scare the poor woman. My ds has had the op because he is a muslim ( cue monkeytrousers to start on her islam speech again) and he was fine. It healed in two weeks. Never caused him pain and he is fine. She is not going to hut to get it done ffs. We had ds done at ulch so he was in the best hands. Is you dh a muslim btw stiggles? If there was a real risk the doctor would tell you.

you upset another mn by your comments so much. She now wont come on to mn. You witter on about islam and how women are treated when you clearly have never experienced it. So come on love dont go for the sympathy vote now. Get fighting in your corner with your big words but we both know you only like threads that you can wind people up on.

it's a thorney issue. i am with you monkey, but you have to be very sensitive about how you approach this.

my opinion on this was informed by a jewish boyfriend that hated his parents for having him circumcised. it makes masturbation more difficult.

and if anyone is going to seriously argue that infants don't feel the pain of it they are being thick or blind or both.

having said that it is a part of a religious/cultural reality, and you might be as likely to find an adult who was angry that his parents didn't circumcise him as an infant as the operation is far more complex and potentially dangerous in adulthood.

Prey, how does upsetting someone make me a racist? Do you want to be more specific?

To "witter" on about the treatment of some women under Islam also makes me a racist does it?

I have never experienced sex trafficking; does that exclude me as a feminist wittering on about that too?

These things make me a racist?

You mistake me if you think I want sympathy. I want a retraction.

OMG!

Mehdi - racism is not defined by religion - so you are completely wrong calling her a racist.

FWIW - I disagree with MT on the male/female circumcision thing - I don't think you can ever equate the two.

Report
ravenAK · 03/03/2008 22:35

I would agree with you, MT, that it is not in fact racist to disapprove of trimming bits off other people's genitals, without their consent, for non-medical reasons.

why not FAQ?

Thanks Soph, but just to clear this up; my comment on the circumsition thread was not part of the wider debate. I posted, said it was my opinion that I was adding the the melting pot and left. I checked in top see if it had developed with nothing more to say, just to follow it.

I don't have anything more to say about circumsion here - lets keep that discusion for the other thread. This is why it is in Pedant's corner. It's about being called a racist, when in actual fact, I am an advocate of universal human rights.

really monkey? It will be a cold day in hell before i retract anything. I was not talking about that thread. I was talking about the thread that was deleted because you and trolleydolley were against islam. So playing the innocent does not work with me. So you deny you are anti islam do you?

ahhh but monkeytrousers universal rights trample individual sensibilities don't they? that is a really really interesting debate.

Mehdismummy do you not think you ought to present some evidence / links to back up your accusations? Otherwise you are in danger of coming across as very rude / insulting, IMO.

MT is certainly not a racist from her comments posted here.

Mehdi Racism is a big stick to brandish, if you intend hitting someone with it at least aim at the rigth person.

With regards circumcision i am with MT but i also don't think that female genital mutilation is the same as circumcision.

Report
Lauriefairycake · 03/03/2008 22:40

Mehdismummy, I have been on other threads with you before when someone was being racist about your religion and I defended you.

IMO it is not racist to object to genital mutilation per se. I myself object to many cultural things, this being one of them. This does not make me a racist.

I object to ear piercing of babies (some people defend this culturally) and genital mutilation of babies.

Report
Blu · 03/03/2008 22:40

This isn't primarily about the circumcision thread, is it?

Mehdismummy - I honestly don't think this is fair, and doesnt help YOU in a rational argment about the degree to which Islam and female mutilation were conflated. Having objections to a religion is not racist. It sometimes (often) has a convniently large overlap - but you were arguing that Islam and GM have been unfarly overlapped - don't fall into the same trap.

I agree with Sophable.
