How can 'we' be pregnant?

One half of the couple can be pregnant, both are expecting a baby.

It drives me insane. It is an Americanism that is creeping into MN and elsewhere.

And it makes no sense.

What do you mean it makes no sense? Can you literally not take a reasonable guess that it's something a couple would say when the woman is pregnant? That's not to say I don't find it a bit of a cringeworthy expression, but it's hardly the end of the English language

However, that was the end of my sentence - I apologise for missing the full stop.

As a man can't be pregnant then it makes no sense.

See?

I am American, and I have never heard anyone say it in RL. As a feminist, I find it pretty damned irritating.

As this is the place for pedantry, I'm still going to say that I can't agree that it makes NO sense. Precisely because men can't be pregnant, if a man says "we are pregnant" I would interpret that as meaning he and his wife are expecting a child. I can make perfect sense of it even if like you I'm not very keen on it.

My ex used to say this, and what she meant by "we", was her and our embyronic DD. Just one of many weird bits of usage she used to confuse the world.

Nanny, did you see the Mila Kunis skit on this.

'Twas good.

Two couples have said it in RL, I had to scream inside smile and say congratulations as I thought it was bad form to rain on their parade. I was so proud of DH though who did a very convincing confused face and asked the men "But how can you be pregnant?"
Oh it really, really irritates me. "We are expecting/having a(nother) baby/We are going to be parents" fine, but not this "we are pregnant" nonsense!

Well, clearly, " they" can't be pregnant.

Anyone, singular or plural, who says it can immediately be filed into the knobber category though. Which has its uses.

I would hazard a completely unscientific guess that the same people go on to call the person they procreate with "mummy" or " daddy". Very probably in an ickle-wickle-baby voice.

They can't. It's a vomitous phrase and incorrect.

Two or more pregnant women can tell someone 'we are pregnant' only

Boils my piss.

Most of these freaks are the people who call themselves 'monkeyfacebestestmummygrace' on Facebook.

Urgh.

It makes me cringe a bit but since pregnant can mean expectant, as in 'pregnant pause' maybe it's not technically wrong?

Yes, it drives me insane, too! Any of the examples Raspberry suggested would be fine, but noooooooo.

If my DH announced that we were pregnant, I would have a fantastic time taking the piss with lots of concerned inquiries about his morning sickness, backache, dodgy bladder, how it went with the internal examination, and whether he's going for a Caesar or vaginal birth.

I hate it. Why not say "WE are having a baby"?
