I wonder if it's partly autocorrect.

If I type definatly it autocorrects to defiantly.

So if people would write definatly then their phones will produce defiantly.

Defiant posters all over the place make me snigger uncharitably.

The amount of times I get parents in saying I've given their child the wrong spelling - argh No I haven't! Apparently one of the most misspelled words in English. Teacher btw.

i will be honest here, i can't spell words with more than 3 vowels.
And i can never ever ever spell the word the op wants and always end up with defiantly (or some variation) and if i am not being very carefull it sticks.
I also never know when words are meant to have 1 or 2 L on the end which are ful and which are full.
So they may very well know but not to be able to spell.

I'm with Scarcy here - my spoken vocabulary is in the 96th centile in a peer group of university graduates (according to Ed Psych), but being dyslexic means I can not for the life of me work out how to spell a great number of words - for instance, I wouldn't have a clue which was correct if I was trying to write it out. Doesn't mean I am thick and don't know the difference.
