Pedants' corner

Radio 4. News reader stumbles, rate thereof.

I've become increasingly bemused at the rate of announcer and news reader errors on Radio 4.
What seems to happen is that the presenter reads from a script with errors, which trips them up.
80% of the time they appear to pre-empt the error with a bit of pausing but 20% or so get through and in just the last couple of days such gems as:

"forced convection" being corrected to "forced confession"
"MS" being corrected to "estimated" Hmm
"boiling point point" Grin

have been blurted out.
I sincerely do not believe that these people cannot read their scripts/autocues.
So what's going on ?

How are these scripts so in error and/or why do the presenters not read them through prior to reading out ?

Haven't they just done away with lots of the professional announcer/newsreaders? This may mean that lots of the people now doing these segments aren't used to it and are nervous.

It's been getting worse over the last 4-5 years.

And it's definitely the scripts, not the announcers that appear to be the problem.

Charlotte Green has retired as a BBC Radio 4 newsreader after 25 years!

Charlotte and her colleague Harriet Cass opted for voluntary redundancy owing to reorganisation. Green's final bulletin was the 6 o'clock news on Friday 18 January 2013.

Shame on the BBC...
