Please rephrase this sentence for me without the double negative.

Wouldn't a double negative be 'He didn't not notice perfume' or 'She had not no perfume'. I don't think your sentence is a double negative. But you're right, it could be better phrased to be clear - as some posters have already shown.

'He was unaware that she was not wearing perfume.'

The term 'double negative' refers to the use of two negatives for one verb.

Your sentence has two verbs, 'notice' and 'wearing' and is grammatically correct. A double negative (i.e. grammatically incorrect) would read: 'He didn't notice that she wasn't wearing no perfume.'

It isn't. He just didn't notice something about her. He didn't not notice something about her, which would mean that he did notice something.

he didn't not notice that she wasn't wearing perfume.
