DD needs an outfit for a disco birthday party - ideas?

DD (5.8) has been invited by a classmate to a "disco" birthday party 3 weeks from now. For the first time ever, she has asked (in advance) what she can wear to dress up for the occasion, which leads me to think there has already been some conversation at school about special clothes for the party.

Anyone got any fab ideas? Want fun, but obviously not tarty. Not opposed to some not-too-expensive purchases from either a party store or a second hand/charity shop but have no inspired thoughts at the moment. Any suggestions much appreciated - especially as I've (for once) given myself enough time to look around.

Earlybird, just out of interest, where in the country are you?

dd1 went to a 'disco party' for a friend's 5 birthday ( friend was in reception but dd was in preschool) I found some of the things the girls were wearing shocking! Boys had gel in their hair but a lot of the girls looked v tarty for just 5/6 year olds

dd wore crop trousers and a cute tshirt - and she was allowed to wear lipgloss......, that was it!

annie, I'm in central London.

Yes, FFRR we could go with a 50's idea. Hmmm. Completely agree about "no Sugababes" look - exactly what I meant when I said "not tarty".

Think I might query the mum about clothes when I phone to reply to invite.

Other ideas anyone?

Oh I agree - one girl at DD's 7th birthday party looked 18 - full make up, high heels and mini dress.
Made me shudder.

YEs, where are you EArlybird?

Tesco do reasonable non tarty clothes in their kid's 'Florence + Fred' range. Also TU clothes in Sainsburys.

For her birthday party, DD wore:-

Bright pink (shocking pink) Papillon jeans, with turquoise sequinned/embroidered bit on the right outer thigh and a scarfy belt thing.

Turquoise sleeveless T shirt

Sparkly sandals

V v v pale pink nail polish.

She looked lovely - fashionable, but in a little girl way.

Yes, I was thinking sparkles might be good...

Found a pair of sparkly jeans in Gap today that might work with a funky belt and fun top, but at £19 they're pricey. I doubt that glittery jeans will be likely candidates for play clothes....so think I'll take them back.

Anyone have other ideas?
