Birthday party is a v big deal for ds1 and me as he's just gone to the school straight into P2 and we know no-one. First in his class to have a b'day (as far as we know) and he's invited some (10) to our house next Tuesday. Plans going quite well (second batch of muffins in the oven, third waiting to send in with him on the day) but I'm off to do all the shopping tomorrow (won't have another opportunity until the day). Planning on doing small party bags with book plus piece of cake and maybe some treasure (gold choc coins for pirates). So - books for 6yo boys that won't break the bank - is what do you think of Mr Men???

TIA

Hmm. Am clearly not pc . No tattoos going forth from my house! Def sweets/chocolate and piece of cake but would rather do one nice party bag thing than yuk plastic which will just irritate the parents (and the children once they realise how useless they are).

Have to say any child I have ever met prefers toys and sweets in a party bag to books, but I agree the parents might prefer books. I would say Mr Men too young for this age- might be fine for some of them but not cool enough for others. I would think about puzzle books or something as a compromise, maybe? Hope he has a nice time

I only gave books (no bag, no sweets) at DS1's recent 5th birthday party. We have bags of cheapo books in the cupboard upstairs, but got more from a discount book shop at Bluewater. If you had more time ... Book People have the Star Wars Clone Wars comic book books (which really are good) quite cheap ...

Yes I think Mr Men maybe aimed a bit young. They might still read them but not to buy. DS (5) has complete set also. What about Horrid Henry - DS finds him so funny.

I did books in DS's party bags this year but had quite a large age group to buy for (3 - 9) We have lots of fantastic charity shops nearby including a great Oxfam book shop so got most for abot 20p each. Please ditch the Mr Men idea - most of the 6 year old boys I know would I think be mortified - I found quite a few funny young reader type softbacks on my search for that age group - jokes, dinosaurs, dr who, star wars, wizards, gruesome stuff, bodily functions, much more their sort of thing I reckon

Agree with the others, Mr Men is too young.

I think WBB's suggestion of Wonder Why books would be great. Also, Woolies sometimes do very cheap puzzle books, poss also themed (eg pirates).

Fab - just confirming what I thought - just having a mental block about what instead. Puzzle books and WWB suggestion top of my shopping list.

Many thanks

I did books for DD's 4th birthday party this year (along with a piece of cake ad a small mini bar of chocolate). For the older children I got these Q&B books

What about:
Eye Witness
Discoveries
Usbourne Science
Poetry
How to...
Horrible Histories

"id do predominatlye sweets ( the worst the better)"

And in the Dragon house they'd all be confiscated and put in the Trick or Treat box for halloween callers.

I've got these "Sprinters" books for DS2's party bags in March.

Ottakers are doing 3 for 2 on all children's books so have large collection of the younger Roald Dahl ones - Fantastic Mr Fox and the like for £3 per book which is great. Between that and their pirate treasure (bags of gold chocolate coins - hoorah for Christmas being in the shops already!) and cake that should be fine.
