Convention regarding presents?

My son has been invited to a 4 year old birthday party.
I was wondering am I suppose to ask about taking a present? Take one anyway? What to get? How much to spend?

Basically this is my first party and was wondering what the rules are regarding presents.

Yes, you need to take a present. I would say £5 to £10 depending on how good a friend it is, but that may be a regional amount.

I've just ordered some packs of books from the book people (Winnie the witch, Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs etc) and the kids get a couple. If I was buying each present individually I'd aim to spend about £5, but this way works out cheaper and DS likes choosing who gets what. A couple of times DS has got two presents the same, so the spare one gets put in the present drawer too.
