Pasta in tomato sauce for kids party?

nappyaddict · 10/06/2014 19:10

Is this odd? A lot of the kids coming don't like sandwiches or bread and tbh I really hate making loads of sandwiches. There's about 40 children and I was trying to think of something I could keep warm in my slow cooker or reheat quickly in the microwave.

Has anyone else served this or something similar at a children's party?

I wouldn't serve anything with tomato sauce if children will be wearing party clothes.

Sounds very messy to me.

Did you want a messy play party?

Is it at your house?

If a hall, warn parents first to dress in old clothes and really go for messy. But sheesh I wouldn't fancy that in my house.

I would! My kids have food intolerences so sandwiches are out. Pasta / sausages and chips are good alternatives.

Really messy!

How about snacky things like slices of pizza, mini sausages, chunks of cheese, plus the obligatory 'healthy' stuff like carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes. and then loads of crisps

I rarely do sandwiches for a kids party now as they often end up being left.

Cold pizza

Ham slices

Cucumber/nibbles

Crisps

Pitta pieces

Cookies

Cupcakes

Chopped fruit

Cheese

That's what I've done for 1-3. Dunno if helps?

You'd be the best host ever as far as my DS is concerned, he doesn't like sandwiches, or the other party staples of sausages and chips. Pasta in tomato sauce is his favourite meal. It is messy though.

How old are the kids?

You could make lasagna with not too much sauce and cut it into pieces

You could make mac and cheese muffins …

Plain pasta with grated cheese

pizza slices

absolutely not unless you want tomato stains on everything

No it's not at my house it's in a hall. What about pasta with pesto?

A few kids have dairy allergy and there is a little girl with Prader-Willi Syndrome so we can't have things like crisps, sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes (obviously we are still having a birthday cake) or ice cream.

I really don't think a pasta dish sounds much like party food, sorry. I don't think it will be popular.

Risky. Sorry. There'll be those that don't like tomato for sure. And the mess factor. Stick to tried and trusted. I always had success with individual party food boxes. Easy to hand out. Easy to clean up.

What about a cold pasta dish, with oil rather than butter and some finely chopped peppers, etc in it?

No - kids want party food - so what if they don't eat it all and need a snack when they get home ! Just don't do too much food as they never eat as much as you think. It is not for you to worry about the guests fussiness re things like not liking sandwiches - what does the birthday girl want..

Party sausage, bowls of crips, cucumber and carrot sticks, more crisps, more sausages and a few plates of sandwiches. Some cakes, marshmallow top hats, maybe ice cream in a cone. I think you are over thinking the little girl - the family must be in this situation a lot and will supervise appropriatley and not expect you to adapt the food and party around one child surely?

I think it's a lovely idea, however, practically, it'll be a disaster.

Loads will not like tomato sauce. Loads will want plain pasta with cheese, some will not like pasta.

You will waste loads.

I vote hot dogs...you can do those in the slow cooker and get a production chain going....one cutting rolls, one putting sausages in rolls, passes to person to serve.

Stick to finger food - sauce is asking for trouble.

Don't make loads of sandwiches - these are always left at parties anyway.

Pizza slices
Mini scotch eggs
Mini Sausage rolls
cocktail sausages
Cubes of cheese
Carrot and cucumber sticks (won't get eaten but you will have shown willing)
Lots of crisps of different shapes (spirals, hulahoops etc)
Fruit and cake

It's a party. It doesn't have to be nutritionally balanced!

After several years of parties, I think it is far easier to stick to "party food" if you have more than 6 guests.

I was never a fan of boxes, but they are great if you have children with intolerance, as you can customise their box.

Or, sausage and chips with salad bits on the table. That's what the soft play centres do, because it works.

DD went to a party where they served this. Even now, months later, she still talks about the party with no party food.

Every child was asking where the party food was. It was a complete waste of food as they all left it.

I think you are over-thinking the needs of the little girl - a compulsion to over-eat will be to over-eat everything, surely? So it doesn't really matter what you serve.

In your situation I would provide all children with either party boxes or a plate of food you have already prepared and covered in cling film.

I yhink hot dogs are super quick and fit those requirements. Bowls of crudites and grapes.
