Trying to sketch out dd1's party, she will be 8 after Christmas and wants a pj party, but I have a really mainc January so need to have some plan in place. She will be 8, party will be at home, max 6 friends, all well behaved except one possible invitee who dh vowed never to have in house again .

She was wanting something to do with bears (dh agreed could get be my bear kit), haven't suggested to her yet, but imagine will agree. Think will take 30min. She also wants to watch Narnia DVD, she wanted 1st, but is over 2hrs. Wondered if Dawn Treader (not so good, but shorter), might be better (107min). Plus food etc.

Was thinking of saying 4:30-7:30; maybe bear making, food then DVD, with blankets, popcorn, hot chocolate and bears. Does this sound enough, should we still have a few other party games? I know my nearly 8 and nearly 6 yr old will sit through it, will all children? Do I need other activities instead if a few are bored or will this ruin the party? Should I suggest guests come in pj/ leggings etc + dressing gowns? Any other tips?

It sounds fab, great ideas. I would think something more substantial to eat may be good as they are unlikely to have their evening meal before they come and won' t
Be back home till late.

Sorry Brandy distracted by Christmas. How are your plans. We have until begining Feb, but already having hassles deciding on timing - dd has a commitment every Sat until 5pm, so don't know whether to go for fri pm after school - 7ish (would have to miss dancing), or 5.15 -8 or the sat of half term when dd is free earlier, but friends might be away. Think will need about 1:40 hrs for dvd, 20 min for food and the rest for bear building, giggles, games etc. Oh and guest list is expanding by the day! Hope your party goes/ went well.

we did a movie party for ds who turned 8 in September. We ordered pizza and they had crisps and juice as well. We had 11 including my two. All were 7/8 and our 3 year old. About 1/2 didn't make it through the movie before getting bored and playing up. I ended up setting up the lego and some crafts for the drifters. I was very suprised but just to warn you that perhaps not all this age will last through a movie.

I'm doing this today but a friend is coming to help so we are setting up a makeover station with nails, curlers and make up. They are l ten but I'm still guessing the movie won't hold them for very long. I've resigned myself to lots of noise and mess for three hours so have Wine

Thanks, I am worried that they will get bored, have warned dd1, I don't mind doing party games etc, but she wants to watch a dvd. Maybe nails etc would be a good distractor if they start getting bored. She has seen the DVD before so don't think she would mind too much, but it is going to be hard if half the party are wanting to watch and the other half drift away bored. I'm much better with the fast paced 4-6yr old parties, you know they won't pay attention so you keep it fast and snappy.

Any other ideas to keep the party going if I have a split? I can organise some craft, but then don't want that to be too special incase it tempts even more children away. With the animals as a sub-theme maybe they could make passports, write stories for their bears? It is fine if it is just one or two, but if I end up with half do I turn the video off? Have them in another room? Get them to help me with washing up and do their homework! ok last one never going to happen!

I have tried to persuade her to choose a different (shorter) film, or a comedy, but she is resolute, though to be fair she has discussed it with some friends and she says they are happy with the choice.

Current plan is it will be after school, so will get home, those who want to change can, then stuffing bears, party food, dvd with popcorn (was never planning to just give popcorn - dd1 wants butterkist, plus might get some multicoloured and do some sugared) part way through, nails if they start getting restless, craft in other room for the truely bored, then a few party games and home. Does that sound ok?

sounds like you have all bases covered. I found that the movie stickers stuck no matter what was on offer and the non stickers couldn't sit and watch if I paid them if that makes sense. I did craft on the table which is in the adjoining room and set up lego on the floor nearby the movie. We had about 20-30 minute meet and greet time before movie started and about the same after the movie ended. Definately needed an active game or two afterwards as they were in need of action...ended up playing duck, duck, goose with them and an quick treasure hunt to collect there little nibble bag (didn't do party bags, just small pick and mix each with a thank you card on a rubber band around the top.)

Thanks yawningmonster it's reassuring that they won't distract the others. We have a conservatory which we heat and use for food/craft, so once I've cleared away the party food we can do craft in there. Think I will google other ideas - think dd1 has settled on stuffable toy puppies, so can do extra things around that theme.

Thinking I should maybe check with parents that they are happy with film choice - it's a PG, they are all 7/8, it's a little scary in places, but they do show PGs in schools, just give parents option to opt out, will put a note in invite maybe.

Oh and party 'bag' will be the stuffed animal and any other craft they make.
