Help please!! Where can I buy clothes to fit dd?

I've just read Aida's thread in teenagers and I have a similar problem. My wonderful dd is nearly 6 but the biggest in her class. She's tall, but also fairly chunky. I wouldn't say fat - maybe some people would - but she's got a bit of a tum, like many little girls have. (Bit like her mum, but that's another story... )
Anyway, we've just had a soul-destroying day trying to buy some trousers or jeans for her - after several hours we've ended up with a garish raspberry coloured velour tracksuit and two pairs of leggings. But as we live in the country and she's always climbing trees and mucking about in mud, she really wants/needs jeans so she can just kick about and they won't rip.
Next jeans were inches apart at the zip, ditto M&S. I'm loathe to pay Boden prices and I don't live near GAP. Does anyone have any ideas? Buying bigger ages doesn't work - they're never any bigger round the tum, they're just far too long in the leg. I'm getting a bit desperate and I REALLY don't want her to start thinking she's fat now - she's already shut herself in the bathroom and shaved her legs once with my razor because she thinks they're too hairy!!
I'm alone - so please forgive the rant - I haven't got a dh around to moan at...
p.s. my first post on Mumsnet!

Sorry, I can't really help (my DD is 2 and tiny). Have you tried the supermarkets? Tesco's Cherokee range is good. Hope someone comes along soon that can help you.

you are not alone.

dd1 is just 11 and already age 13 -14 is too small. Don't know where I am going to get her next jeans from.

dd2 is smaller with j-lo bum and I am having a problem with finding jeans for her ATM.

Peacocks have some good chldrens clothes I have had some success with them.

They do get fed up trying stuff on that doesn't fit.

Bless school uniform and skirts.

Im sure I saw a larger fit range in my Next catalogue - have a look on their website. If not next then must've been littlewoods.

H&M often have trousers with adjustable waists. Jeans never fit my DD, she has just become tall and slim after being stocky for a while, but she still measures more round the middle than her height indicates. next, M&S & Primark are definitely out. H&M is a life saver.

we also found several pairs in charity shop which were like combats but with a soft ribbed waistband - no obvious label, but they had quite a 'surfer' style, so there are some about!

FWIW dd1 is about 5' 4 and has always been above the 95th centennial. She is in size 6 shoes.

She can wear a womans 8 or 10 top, but the legs are too long still and she doens't want to shop in womans departments. Sophies (mark one) used to be good but they have just closed down near us.

Yes, Next have started doing 'plus sizes' in some children's sizes. It's not very obvious from the website which ones come in plus sizes, but if you search 'belted flared jeans' that is one which comes in plus sizes.

I wouldn't suggest Boden anyway. They fit my DD perfectly and she has the opposite problem to your DD.

We find stuff in the supermarkets is too big for DD round the waist so perhaps worth having a look there?

SueW, that's intersting you think that, because I have to say Boden is my saviour at the moment. DD (nearly 8 but in 10-11 or 1-12)is also very tall and she has a tummy, and I find Boden dresses fantastic. The cord A line shirty type one is great and trendy, and dd loves the velour stripey one. She is now at the age that she wants jean type stuff so I am going to order the cord cargoes cos they have a stretchy waistband. I know its not cheap but I found it a lot easier and less soul destroying for both of us to buy from there.

La redoute do some trousers in 3 fittings for girls and boys -most of theirs have elastic tabs as well.

Just was goint to say the same as Jamila. La redoute do a generous fit, but found both la redoute and vertbaudet quite generous on their waist fittings. Adams also seem to have huge waists, even an elasticated skirt fell past dd's hips.

My DD (8) still has a rounded tummy. I got some jeans in sainsburys recently which seem Ok.

But jeans aren't the best thing for climbing IMO - the cloth is too stiff. I'm starting to buy more off the boy's rails - dark blues, khakis (which look great with bright pink tops and don't show the mud stains), more combat style and often have adjustable waists.

My latest aquisitions were 2 different types of navy boy's trousers from Asda, for the princely sum of £4 ... in total!

Asda seem big round the waist and bum too - I can't get DS1 trousers from there at all because they wont stay up, SIL and her sis get DN and cousins play clothes from there as they are all tall and have tummies!

Asda boys stuff is very generously cut, so the girls stuff might be too.

EmsMum · 25/10/2007 00:24

yeah, I get trackie type girls trousies from asda for DD as well as the boys stuff. She usually wears those below the waist though.

I posted something similar about my DS2 who is 4. Some posters suggested BHS and they were right, for boys anyway. They are quite big in the waist compared to some and not too long in the leg.

Also Tesco/Cherokee although you do have to be careful. I bought 2 pairs of trousers for DS1 who is tall and slim (compared to DS2 anyway) and he didn't fit into one of the trousers around the waist and legs very well.

I don't know what has happened to M&S - they used to come up big but they seem really skimpy now. In fact I have a pair of jeans that I bought 3 or 4 years ago for DS1 which fit DS2 now but he can't get into the brand new ones.

I have found Sainsburys to be small as well.

Mothercare aren't bad sometimes although they are fairly expensive but again they are variable size wise.

Yes, BHS also fairly large waisted.

galetti - that makes sense, to be honest. Boden is one of only a few places DD can have jeans in her size without a really baggy bum effect. We still have to use the adjustable waistbands though to pull them in.

In many shops waist-size she fits into a age 7-8 but that's completely impractical with jeans and trousers. She is still wearing - albeit as cut-offs - jeans we bought in the US over two years ago, from Gap where they have slim fit for kids.

She doesn't really do dresses.

Thanks for all your messages. I'll give some of those suggestions a try.

Adjustable waists only seem to go one way in my opinion... work much better for those with the slim DDs.

Thanks,
Caroline

My DD is nr 8 and now 10-11s in some shops dont fit round the waist (she is 98centile height and 93 weight) as the waists start to go in after this age as girls generally get more shape then.

I generally buy cropped jeans or trews to wear with boots or tights, or take up full length jeans. Have got some Boden cords with a stretchy waist, but now a little snug on the bottom. I like Boden as the clothes which are suitable for young girls go up to size 14 yrs? which means no more wearing age innapropriate clothes.

A good friend recently rec a dutch childrens clothing site (didn't give name) as they do trews in 3 leg lengths. If I find out I will post.

It is soul destroying isn't it, my DD hates being so much taller than her friends (and having size 2 feet) Hope you find some nice things
